nano stand

Last time I built a stand it was for a 55 gallon tank. All the research I did said to use 2x4's for vertical supports, and 2x6's for horizontal pieces and that is exactly what I did. With a 8 gallon cube, would I be safe with 1x2's for vertical supports and 1x3's for the horizontal pieces? The tank is 15" x 15", and I plan on making the stand 30"w x 18"d x 32"t. There will be a piece of granite on top and three sides will be fastened to the structure.

I'm a hands on type of person. I changed jobs 2 months ago, going from working as an auto tech to a desk job. I find now that when I get home, I need to do something. The urge to build is growing. I am working on a "turbo lamp" now using the blown turbo from my car and a bad camshaft. That should be done this week. After that, I was going to build a stand for my nano. The wife and I renovated our kitchen, so I have the wood to make a stand. I plan on making it look like a cabinet when it is finished.
