I was going to propose one of those. I got one for my Q tank and although I have not installed it yet it looks like in principle it will work, it has an adjustment for how much flow you want removed from top and how much from the bottom.

I wanted to increase the circulation on my 29gal biocube so I got a Hydor Koralia 1 Circulation Pump/Powerhead UL 400 gph..
I cannot tell you enough how much more my corals are opening..
It also totally got rid of my surface film.... did not know what caused it but it bugged me now it is gone....
The flow even on the model 1 is strong so it is on the right side of my tank pointing up and created better flow and really moves the surface... So far the best $35 I have put into the tank......
will solve your whole surface skimming problems

i put an airstone about 3 inches under water and let it run for a few hours and it works really well to dissapate the film.

Update: Received it, but it doesn't fit in a 5.5G. It's too tall.

Anybody want to buy a cheap surface skimmer?
