The tank now with some more rock and a light upgrade. 96watt PC

So the question of the day, Would that be enough light if I had more rock towards the top of the water and placed SPS at the top of said rocks????

I'd have to say no on the sps. Some more rock and a background would be nice. And if your good at DIY projects a custom canopy would make this tank look really nice.

uhhmmm..
Well I have 26 watts of light and I have 4 SPS now, one down at the bottom, and they are doing VERY well.

They have great color (although different color than un MH), and they are GROWING.

I don't know if I'm just lucky, or what, but each MARS meeting I have been getting SPS and they have been doing great for months now.

Even Mihn's SPS he gave me is doing great!!
Except for the one I killed due to Kalkwasser overdose.

Standard 12G JBJ Nano lighting.

I plan to add another bulb this week to see if I can get them to grow even faster.

Eric (The Marmot) has monties in his 10gal nano. I think the tank has 64W of PC. They are dong great and have good color and growth. He did try to add an acro a while ago, but I think it had AEFW's and he lost it after a week or two.

Acro Eating Flat Worms.....one of the many scourges and problems of SPS along with redbugs.....check out the SPS forum and see the damage and fear they bring.

The debate of whether or not SPS will survive in a small nano is a debate similar to is T5 or MH better lighting.

The old "watts per gallon" adage works as a guide line for keeping corals, but is not set in stone.

The real matter of lighting SPS is intensity rather than amount.

In your case with the 96w you could probably keep SPS, but I wouldn't go overboard and by an expensive frag and hope to keep it. I would think in a tank that size the SPS would die from alk/temp/salinity swings way before the light ultimatly comes into play. I say if you want to get your feet wet with SPS and catch the bug that cost me ohhhh $500 in about a foot of colored sticks in the last couple of weeks, then go right ahead.

I first bought two colonies from Aqualife for $80 and RTN'd them in less than a week, due to alk/salinity/temp swings....so I think putting in the nano would be a good experience before you get the bug and buy lights, reactor, controllers, and on and on and on.......For me its the challenge of SPS that draws me to it.

In fact Edwin, I have some starter Green Montipora Digitada I could let you try out. By the way, I live real close to you (Fulton and Northrop)-Doug

On second thought, if you want to upgrade your lighting again, buy one of those clip on coralife 150w MHs with the 14k light...then lighting won't be an issue.

Yeah I saw those clip on lights, Which run about 225. I might have that much later in the year, but not right now.

Once I get everything done and ready, I will keep you in mind for the green digi.

I totaly understand about the cost of the SPS and the care it takes for them. I will just start out mainly softies and LPS. Once I get alk/calc/mag and everything in check, Ill try my hand at some starter SPS.

Thank you for the offer.

looks good i would add some more rock.. How is the water qaulity? I always heard its difficult to keep up with in a small tank? Plans for inverts or a fish?

Its going to mainly a coral tank, But I am going to add one or two small fish, a cleaner shrimp and clean up crew and I will be adding more rock.
