Nano Wrasses?

I´m going with a flasher as well in my nano (Yellow Fin Flasher wrasse) he is living together with a Tailsplot blenny and they are swiming together all the time, it´s really sweet..

But I think a Tanaka's Pygmy wrasse (Wetmorella tanakai) or White Banded Possum wrasse (Wetmorella albofasciata) would also make great nano wrasse! Maybe I´ll add one to my flasher..

I agree, wrasse can have a mind all their own. You never really know until you try the one you like out. I had a melauaris wrasse in my 34g with 2 Ora black ice snowflakes, bangi cardinal, Ora splendid dottyback, diamond goby, lawn mower Blenny ,and everyone played nice. So wrasse can be awesome some are just plain wrasse holes. Lol

I've never heard of a melauaris wrasse before...perhaps you can provide pictures? I'm surprised even the dottyback plays nice in your tank.

Also, yes, wrasseholes is the best name ever!

Lars, that's a gorgeous flasher wrasse! I feel very inspired by your tank. I think I might try one of the flashers in my next nano. I do love tailspot blennies, too...

I really would love to hear more about possum wrasses, but I might have to post about them somewhere else. The Tanaka's possum wrasse is stunning, from the picture on LiveAquaria.

I kept a leopard wrasse (Macropharyngodon meleagris) in my 28g aquapod. It was an awesome fish, I had to sell her after a couple of years when I moved. The only thing she would eat is brine shrimp so i got the frozen spirulina enriched type and that seemed to keep her fat and happy. They like to burrow under the sand at night so you just need a couple of inches, i had fine black sand in mine.

I have a six line in a 8 gal nano. He kind of ended up there by accident. I had bought him for my 34 gal, but my dotty back kept nipping at him.
He is the only fish in the tank and is fun to watch. He comes out of the rocks at the same time every morning when I am having breakfast, and hides in the rock at night. Eventually he will be a bigger tank I think.

Considering what I know about leopard wrasses, I'd be far too afraid to try one, especially in a nano tank. Most tank sizes for them are listed as 50+ gallons, plus the "expert only" label is intimidating.

I might be spelling it wrong but when I get home I will post a pic of him, amazing color for sure. My dotty back is pretty awesome and very well mannered from what I can tell lol:debi:

I had yellow coris wrasse and a mccoskers wrasse in 30g tanks and they were well behaved. I had no aggression issues at all.

Did the yellow coris seem too cramped in that tank? Liveaquaria lists them as more suitable for 50+ gallon tanks. Also, are they reef safe? I ask because LA also says they may not be towards invertebrates.

A two spot hog nose wrasse is a nice fish for a 25 - 30 gal tank. They are also known as Candy Wrasse. A bright yellow color and are considered a beneficial fish as they eat pest such as aptasia before they can take hold. They are swimmers nad have great personallity, coming to the glass when ever you approach the tank. The can get up to 4" but usually max out about 3". They are not agressive and will not harm other fish and are completely reef safe. However they can intimidate very shy fish like a red firefish and some of the other dart fish. However dart fish like a purple firefish can usually manage for themselves.

Happy Reefing

I have a lubbock wrasse in my 28 HQI without issues. Most of the nano tank owners I know have 6 lines in there tanks and have no issues. Again its been posted prior but keep your lid on cause all wrasses like to jump when given the chance. :) Good luck

I completely forgot about the Candy Hogfish. That might be a good alternative to a yellow coris, since it's smaller.

The coris wrasse was fine in the tank. He was about 3" long, maybe a little less. He didn't bother snails, crabs or peppermint shrimp. As with all critters, your mileage may vary.

I've had three sixline wrasses. The first one got fried when my heater was "stuck on". The second was ambushed by a mantis shrimp I presume. (No trace of him.) I like this fish so much I tried again. The one I have had for months now is in a standard 29 gallon with and ocellaris, blue/green chromis, royal gramma, and fireball angel. They all get along due to the fact they are not underfed which would contribute to constant bickering.

I also had a canary wrasse "coris" and it broke its back diving into the bottom glass thinking it was sand. This wrasse has to have sand.
