narrowed it down to 2 skimmers

Sherm71tank- I won't debate anything as there have been a multitude of threads arguing the differences between beckett and NW and I don't think that starting another one is going to do any good.

And I'm not saying that a nw or beckett is better or worse, just different :D .

teen- The Octopus NW-200 is the same size as my H&S 200-1260 that I use for my 110 SPS tank. The pump is not the same, but if you find you need more power than you can do the gate valve mod or the mesh wheel mod or even replace the pump.

the way i see it right now is that more $$ doesnt neccessarily mean a better skimmer. thats why im leaning towards the octopus NW200.

there all gunna pull out junk, i plan on having a crazy amount of flow, and the xenia/ macro in the fuge along with a phosban reactor. im only using tonga branch so theres not guna be a lot of area for detritus to hide.

I forgot who posted a mesh wheel mod on an Octopus Skimmer, they actually had to lengthen the neck by a couple of feet only using a mere 65 watts. I used to have an MRC-2R myself, dual beckett. I now have an Octopus DDNW-250, less noise, less heat, adjustment is much easier, less eruptions, ...when you clean a beckett and start it back up it will take at least 4hours, when you get used to it to set the skimmer back up. A needlwheel can be reset within 10-15 min. Now when my MRC was cleaned and set back up it skimmed like mad, but did require alot more tweaking and constant adjustments throughout the week as the air silencers accumulate dust and the becketts slowly gather excess salt. If power shuts off then restarts when you are not home, the skimmer will boil out a gallon or more out of your tank, have a large resevoir. I know from personal experience, a needlwheel can boil out some but maybe a cup or less.

i think im just gunna go with the octopus NW200 and put the bit of money i save into my tunze fund.

anybody disagree?

devilboy: which skimmer did you switch too?

sherm: looks like a nice skimmer, but its kinda pricey. its gunna run me like 550 with the pump.

any other suggestions?

i switched over to the Reef Octopus NW200. The MR1 was to finicky when it came to adjustments.

Pretty much the same here. I went from a MR-1 to a the recirc 200 Octo when I upgradged.

The MRC is very well built but its technology is dated not just the beckett but the body of the skimmer as well.

The Octo skimmed darker, ran quieter, and used half the wattage of the MRC.
