naughty's bc 14!!

there's two in boulder,

exotic aquatics and aqua imports, the guy at the exotic aquatics is super nice but he tried to sell me some "fast cycle" magic liquid, so i'm a little skeptical, but the guys at the other one are just not very nice and waved off all of my questions :(

i think i'll be getting my clown fish from the first one anyway, cause they are super cute there, but other than that i dunno...

and i'm so sad about like, petsmart and petco and stuff, i can't stand to look at the poor sick animals in there :(. their fish are all covered with white and a hair away from dying.... maybe that's what i get for living in the middle of the continent :/

Exotic aquatics is a good store what they try to sell you is something that dose work (half a**) You may want to join the local club if you have not. It is masc they have a .com + a form on rc.

oooh okay! i'll definitely check that out and join!! i didn't know how to go about finding one of those :D thanks so much for the info :)

oh man, so it dumped at least 6 inches of snow on us today, what a blizzard, i looked like a freakin snowman by the time i walked home from class...

i should probably wait to get those rocks shipped out so i don't have to drive all the way to denver in this crap :(

updates!

i put water in it :) well, just so it can run for a few days and i can make sure it doesn't break and leak and stuff. also good to know the jager heater works, i really like it :)

here's some pictures :)

hello
have chosen a beautiful aquarium.
rocks when you put some pictures to view

okay, so i still haven't ordered the live rock... but now i'm kind of glad i've waited.

i've been monitoring my temp and i think i've finally got the heater all figured out, gotta see how it holds up with lights but other than that i really like the eheim jager. also i'm still trying to fix the salinity (it is way low), and while i'm at it probably do just a bit more shopping...

things on the list:

~powerhead (i need one that could stay quiet but produce enough flow, ideas??)
~salt (what kind do you guys like?)
~big bucket
~api reef master test kit
~chemipure elite
~media tray?? (maybe soon)
~refractometer! (do you know of anyone selling any used ones?)

vortech mp10 seems to be everyones favorite. Mine will be here on friday. They are pricey at $220, but i've heard worth every penny. Ill know in a couple days!:bounce3:

Since you are being budget minded ( a good thing in this hobby) get 1 or 2 Koralia nano 425s as your power heads. I personally use brightwell aquatics salt. Start saving for later upgrades (you will want them) Like a Reefkeeper lite. For 115.00 you have a lot more control over your heater also your lighting.

The koralia nano is a cheaper option. It's not as good as the vortech, but it's plenty for a small tank. Upgrade the stock pump to something that moves more water for a little extra push. Hydor makes some pumps that will fit. The one that comes to mind has 1200 somewhere in the name. Foster and Smith sells them and they're pretty cheap.

whoooo spending tons of money :D
ordered all of this from foster and smith, going to see about returning my hydrometer/timer strip :)

- hydor koralia nano 425
- hydor flo
- reef master api test kit
- chemi pure elite 6.5 oz
- red epoxy putty
- refractometer

- media tray from steviet's website!

ahhh allllllmost ready, i can't wait! just need a bucket and gonna go pick out some salt and then after testing my light cycle temps for a few days and getting the salinity to where it should be i'll order all my rock and sand :)

i decided this is going to be the coolest 20th bday present ever, and i'm going to do it right :D

Next time you buy the epoxy for your frags or rock, get the stuff from Home Depot. AquaMend or something similar works like a champ and is cheaper than the aquarium specific stuff.

Sounds like you're off to a good start

a couple questions i've still got:

~ how big of a salinity fluctuation is acceptable?
~ what salt should i buy?
~ annnd would i be able to use the koralia nano to mix my salt water? just stick it in a bucket n stuph?
~ where should i keep my filter floss? and should i keep the little sponge cube in the back?
~ should i not use a fishnet for saltwater critters? i read somewhere about it and got confused.

any input at all is always welcome :)
thanks!

I keep my rear chambers filled pretty high in my biocube. When the middle and left drop below 2 or so inches from my full line I add water. It takes a day or 3 for it to happen, even with my MH.

I use Reef Crystals salt. Some people swear by certain brands, but I've never noticed a difference when I had to use Oceanic or Brightwells. I try to stick with one brand because consistency is the name of the reefing game.

You can use your nano to mix salt but you'll probably want to get another cheap powerhead to mix it for you down the road. I keep a little $15 one in my mixing bucket along with a heater. I add salt, use the heater as a stir rod and plug them in. Its worth spending the extra few dollars on them. Buy used and don't focus on brand for mixing pumps.

Ditch the sponge or clean it regularly. It will trap detritus and cause nitrate problems if you don't. I'd run the filter floss on top of the second chamber, as the water flows in. Make it easy to get to so you can change it regularly, for the same reasons as the sponge.

critters with spines are bad to net. I use a net for my clowns, goby and the like. I didn't use one for my dwarf lion when I passed him along. Be smart about it and just don't squish them when trying to nab them. If catching snails and slow moving critters, just grab them. There's no need for a net unless they're fast, pinchy or pokey.

a couple questions i've still got:

~ how big of a salinity fluctuation is acceptable?
top off daily or everyother and you'll be fine
~ what salt should i buy?
i use trpoic marin pro salt and love it
~ annnd would i be able to use the koralia nano to mix my salt water? Just stick it in a bucket n stuph?
yes a korali nano 425 would be good for mixing, i use a maxi jet 1200 and that works well also.
~ where should i keep my filter floss? And should i keep the little sponge cube in the back?
sponge cube.....only if you plan to clean it every couple days......i took mine out because i knew i wouldn't clean it all the time, as so filter floss, are you getting the media basket?
~ should i not use a fishnet for saltwater critters? I read somewhere about it and got confused.
what critters? I just use it for my fish,
my cucumber, snils and etc i just pick them up and put them in/take out

any input at all is always welcome :)
thanks!

thanks for the always useful comments :)

yay! media basket is here

and it looks super fancy :spin1:

do you guys know where the extra plastic pieces go???

naughty, the clips go in between the chamber. They direct the water so it falls right in the center of the rack.

You have to super glue the 2 smaller pieces of plastic to the bigger piece. There is a video on the website that shows you exactly what to do. To use those pieces you also have to cut out a small part of the back chamber divider. Its pretty easy as long as you have a sharp knife, also maybe try heating up the plastic with a lighter to make it easier to cut.
