'Nawlins frag drive

With the impending doom the great city of New Orleans is facing, a thought came to me after seeing a news broadcast. In the broadcast they were detailing how they converted a swimming pool several miles inland, to seawater to shelter the dolphins from the wrath of the hurricane. It then occurred to me that the last time I was in the Big Easy, I noted that the aquarium is right in the downtown area! It will almost certainly be completely destroyed by the storm surge, winds, and flooding. The dolphins may have been saved but any reef setups will be wiped out.

Once they clean up the mess of what is certain to be the worst disaster in the city's history-- a process that is estimated to take 6 months or more-- I thought it would be a nice gesture on our part to send them some frags to replenish their stocks. I'm starting now. Anyone who thinks this is a good idea, pick up the reigns and get started.

Okay sounds good to me and after everything settles down down there I will have my daughter get information on who to contact about when they are ready and where to send it. And unless this storm does something to change Tulane's graduation date I should be going down in May.

By the way she is fine they evacuated to Atlanta Saturday.

Well gang, I don't know if we need to now. It appears that the Big Easy has yet again dodged a bullit. That's two close calls in as many years. They got hit this time but not with a cat5 so lots of damage but no Lake 'Nawlins. Thank God!

Now let's see if this wakes up the New Orleans city council and the Louisiana state government. They were hit 30 some years ago and sat on their butts ever since just on hopes and prayers. Reinforce those dikes and levies! Build them up taller! Put in a bunch of MASSIVE pumping stations that are impervious to flooding! Do something about Lake Choo-Choo Train (Pontchartrain). I love that city and I'd hate to see it washed away.

Laissez Les Bon Temps Roulette! AYEEEEEE!!!!!

Count me in! I will find something to send! Just let me know when~

Just to help you out LowCel! You can have Bruce and I will sign B Neal

lol, don't think that's necessary bneal3. I never sign my posts anyway. If I did people may try to hold me accountable for some of the bs that I type. :D

I'm currently trying to contact the aquarium to see if they have lost anything. Currently their site appears to be down-- little doubt as to why. I have been peeking at the news coverage and I think they are fine. However, I still think this might be a great idea anyway! As soon as they are back on line I'll try and contact them to see if we have anything they might want. Heck, it is no problem for me to clip off some green birds nest etc. and send them some frags as a gesture of good will.

If we have stuff they don't have, perhaps they will recieve our frags and respond in kind and send us some stuff as well. Obviously they won't be able to send us a huge number of identical frags for everyone bla bla bla. But hey! If we send them a "care package" and they send us some stuff too, I'm sure we can find "custodians" within our club to propogate these frags (whose tanks are properly set up to house and grow them), for future distribution within our group and abroad!

In addition, we could expand on this concept and contact the Natn'l aqu. Baltimore, the Shedd aqu. Chicago etc etc. with a similar arrangement. See where I'm going???

Look folks, if we truely want to make a global impact, this might be a great tool to do so.

The Shedd Aqu. is HUGE on seahorse propogation (I've seen their set ups and they are amazing even to someone outside the "seahorse clique) and we have an ex-member who I am responsible for ticking off who is a bit of a seahorse expert and who would probably be interested in us trading frags for some interesting horses that a hobbiest could breed. I'm trying to patch things up because I was a HUGE JERK and thankfully most of you have forgiven me. I guess we'll see what happens.

Anyway, this now unneeded frag drive might still yet be useful and may indeed be a bit of serendipity. We'll see.

New Orleans is flooding worse now than when the storm actually was there so they could still need frags.

The power is also off and everything is down don't know when power will be back on

Very considerate of you and everyone!

Kool thanks
but probably easiest if you just watch this thread

I haven't heard about the NO aquarium, but I just saw footage of the Gulfport, MS aquarium....and it was leveled, so don't limit your contact to NO, there are probably a few places that were affected.

"...but I just saw footage of the Gulfport, MS aquarium....and it was leveled..."

Just saw the same, the place was destroyed.
When the time is right if you want to help with restocking which is the least of their worries snow, watch this thread.

I would imagine it will take quite some time to replace a building like that, so by that time I might actually have something worthwhile to send.

Yup folks, I spoke too soon. Unfortunately two levees that I know about broke and for those of you who have never seen footage of a levee leak, it can start out as a seep, which carries with it some muddy water. As more and more water seeps through and carries more and more dirt with it, soon a hole develops. Once the hole is there the process goes pretty quick. The water quickly washes away massive amounts of dirt and within a matter of minutes a seep can turn into a gaping hole with massive amounts of water rushing through and then the whole levee washes away as if it were a child's sand castle at high tide.

This is truely a devastating event for New Orleans. It is my understanding that some parts of the city are under 20 feet of water. The French quarter is undoubtedly pretty bad. The N.O.A. is not far away. I fear the worst for it. The city would have been OK if those levees would have held. I had not though of that possibility. What a shame. It looks like we need care packages for two aquariums now.

All that will be a long time in the future. All those homes washed away, the loss of life, the mess, the infrastructure. These people have much bigger problems right now than worrying about a bunch of fish and corals. I feel so bad for these folks. For once I'm at a loss for words.:sad2: :sad1:

I just attempted to contact the Gulfport, MS aquarium. They are still offline. I was able to send our condolences and our care package message to the N.O.A.-- by the way operated by the Audobon Society-- and I am about to post a link to this thread on the main page at R.C. and R.F. I think this is WAAAYY too big for our little dinky club but nationwide reefclubs united, we can really help out. What a disaster. I wish I had been as wrong in my initial post as I thought I was in the 2nd one. Sadly, that just ain't the case. The storm itself left the area in decent shape. The massive flooding afterword... different story. I pray for those folks.
