Neat new(?) product

At least I've never seen it before.

I stopped by a garden shop on my way back from lunch. I was looking at the metal halide grow lights, when I noticed once of them moving back and forth on a motorized rail.
Rather than explaining, just check this out.

This would be cool to have a 250-400w hallide covering a 4-6ft long tank in long, slow passes.
Just an idea....

Wow, Mark. Thats pretty interesting. I'm not 100% sure I'd want to add even more things that could break easily to my setup :D but it could be really useful!

I think a few of the higher end guys have started to use these. I know a lot of aquaculture people do (get more coverage from less light). I also know it is what they use over their coral tables at That Fish Place's retail store.

It would certainly do away with some of the constantly shadowy areas in a tank, but I'm not sure I could ever justify the price tag.

I actually started looking into these a few weeks ago, the company actually markets them for reef use, and sells refurbs for about $180.

The biggest problem that I would have with one is that I was looking @ a 6 foot tank, and it would traverse the 4-5 foot travel with the 6RPM motor in about 4.5 minutes.... WAY too fast for my liking. I have heard of people using them in tandem with a light timer and getting it to move across the tank just once a day though, but not sure how precise this is.

Some have been doing that for a long time. I know that Fishey Business used to have some when they were in Nashville. That was when I started keeping SW. Ghosh I miss that store.

I use 2 of the 6 light movers. Check out greenhouse supply places, you can pick them up CHEAP! I got mine for $130 each. I use 2x250MH with lumen bright reflectors on each.
