In a 60"X20"x20" 104 gal aquarium with various LPS (bubble, plate, brain, frogspawn) some maxima clams and anemones, are metal halides absolutely necessary. Will save much $$$$ if not.

No. With enough vho or T5 you can keep what you want.

Difficult to say would need more specifics are what lighting configurations you had in mind.
With the right reflectors you may be able to light it with less MH than flourescent. Initial costs depending on what fixtures or retros your interested in will also dictate how much savings or none at all.
