Neck Extension

I have a 250 gallon aquarium with 55 gallon refugium and I am thinking about getting a protein skimmer. I am having a lot of issues trying to find the right one. My refuigum was never meant for a protein skimmer and the space I have avalible for a skimmer is 12"X9.8". Is it worth my time to get a skimmer that fits in that area and just put 3 neck extensions on it or should I just go with an external skimmer?

Stylo328- I am working on getting a picture to post but even if I elevate the skimmer I still run into the same problem of a quality skimmer fitting in the small area I have in the sump. Could I use a smaller skimmer with the neck extensions is what I am trying to ask. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

The reason I ask is because there are several good skimmers that have the pumps located beneath the body of the skimmer. Reef octopus markets them as SSS (super space saver). There are a few other brands that follow a similar design and might allow you to take advantage of the narrow footprint and still get a quality skimmer. Sorry if I am misunderstanding your question. good luck

No, you got it now! I just have a foot print for a smaller skimmer for a 180 gallon tank but unfortunately (more fortunatley) for me is that my tank is 250 gallons. Ill check out the SSS models! Do you happen to know about neck extensions? If I use 3 neck extensions on a 200 gallon use aquarium skimmer, will that up my skimmer from a 200 gallon use to a 300 gallon use?

Sorry, no clue on neck extensions. For what its worth, I ran a very successful 180-gallon well-stocked reef (400 corals and about 20 fish) using an ASM g3.
