Need a new Reliable & QUIET retrun pump

Thank you all for your help.
I was just checking the review on the Sicce Syncra 4.0 and Eheim 1262. They both sound great for external and quietness. may need to flip a quarter on this one.

Both pumps are great, you really can't go wrong with either.

Is an external pump preferable to a submerged?

There are pros and cons to both. An external pump transfers a less heat into the tank, internal pumps run a little quieter since the water dampens some of the noise, also with an internal pump if you have a plumbing leak it is confined into the sump.

Right now the plumbing is for my external Iwaki pump. The only reason I'm shopping for a replacement is cause it's noisy.

Also mine is the db8 if I remember correct. I also used it to replace an external, and I'm running it submerged now as it was just easier. And as far as the pipe thread, you use American thread and just use Teflon tape. That's per the manufacturers instructions.

What size outlet pipe are you running back to the tank?

Hi everybody! I am new to the forum. I've just picked up a 120 gallon tank with a 30 gallon sump. I have the Iwaki 40rxt and it makes too much noise. I'm looking to replace it with a quieter pump without losing reliability. Also, I can't have it bigger in size than the pump I have now

My used 120 came with the same pump. I'm going to upgrade to a eheim 1260 once the bank account recovers, my first pump was an eheim and I'm a big fan. My sump takes up a lot of space in my cabinet, but I don't run a fuge or anything so I'd rather use the space to submerge a pump for less noise and to gain space for tools in the cabinet. It's not hard to cap the bulkhead if your pump is plumbed out the side of the sump.

There's also a mod for these where you replace the fan that is driven by the impeller motor with quiet laptop fan. It looks pretty easy and folks seem happy with it. http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=828812 Read to the end of the thread, they came up with a better design toward the middle.

In my case i decided to go with the Reef Octopus RODC 5500 because of the warranty of 2 years and i am using the WaterBlaster HY-5500 for 4 years already without a hiccup so i expect that this one has the same quality.

Thanks for everybody's advise.
