Need a Skimmer and Memphis LFS Recommendation

Hey Guys,

I need to buy a skimmer. I posted this elsewhere:

I have a RR 125 FOWLR. (about 80lb LR with crushed coral substrate) It has one overflow located in the middle of the back wall. I installed a Durso standpipe.

I have a sump that was converted by the previous owner from wet/dry. It has a max capacity of about 15 gallons and is made of black acrylic. I'm using a BlueLine 30 HD external pump for return. The sump has a built in skimmer that I'm not using. A Sea Clone skimmer was also included with the aquarium. I haven't set it up either.

My aquarium is currently home to a sole 12" Snowflake Eel.
I plan to slowly add a few fish with a Porc Puffer as the center piece. From what I've read, my biolode will be high with the eel and puffer.

My current sump's dimensions will support a skimmer base of 9x9 without further mods. I can cut out some dividers to make more space. I can then support a 9x15" footprint. I'm not opposed to moving to a new sump. I measured and could fit a 20 long or 29 without modifying the stand. But, I think the skimmer that I can fit in my current setup will fit that much better in the larger sump.

My budget is ~$250. I would like a few recommendations that I can check for at my LFS.

I received a recommendation of the Octopus NWB-150 or SWC 160.

What skimmer do you guys recommend? Any I can buy from LFS?

And about Memphis LFS, which is the most popular? I've bought from Memfish. But, how about Kermit's Reef or Something Fishy? I bought my eel from Bob's Tropicals. PM your opinion or experience if you prefer.

Thanks!

Don't buy anything at Something Fishy. Their stuff is so overpriced it is not even funny. Almost twice what the other LFS charge.

Memfish and Kermits are both nice places with great looking livestock. I've bought fish and inverts at both and have been very pleased. If you haven't been to Kermits yet, you have to go just to check out their display tank though. It's impressive.

I noticed that when I was shopping for a return pump. They are closer to me than Kermit's and Memfish. But, I don't mind the drive.

Memfish got me when I bought a 5lb live rock at ~$6/lb and the next day they had LR on sale for ~$3/lb. :eek2:

I went by Kermits a couple of months ago. There were two employees wrapped up in a game of Magic or some other fantasy card game. I was just browsing, but I haven't been back since.

I have a Turboflotor Multi SL HOB skimmmer. It cane be HOB or hang on sump.
Great skimmer, I had it on a 55 and it pulled out all kinds of junk.
Its rated for up to a 200 gallon tank.
Im asking $175 for it.

I'm sure that it is nice, but not quite what I'm looking for. Thanks, though.

I have a coralife super skimmer 125 used but in great condition in it original box. It can be hang-on or in-sump. $75. ....if interest, pm me...

+1 for Kermit's & MemFish. Both Support our Club!

As to the "other place", which isn't even worth mentioning, they do absolutely nothing for us, so take your queue from that.... :thumbdown

Kermit's is a great resource and very fair people to deal with. You just must have caught them on an off day.

Everybody has down time at work. (Well....unless of course you work for an Airline! )

Give Kermit's another Shot.

That's funny. I have seen that before. That, or either video games or DVD's. LOL But I guess it could get boring being there all day if nothing needing doing in the store........
