great looking skimmer looks like its going to be a beast, I would diy mine, but with the time loss from family and work. wow that's a lot of digging, LoL. on my tank when I get ready to frame it all in, I will make it to where no sand is seeing..covered 5"of the bottom so viewing will be 90"L x 48"W x 25"H, cut off 3" on each side so I don't have to look at bare walls..keep em coming..oh how are those lm3 do you have to clean any salt creep from, I went ahead and got the large LM3 pendent with the glass so cleaning will be a breeze.
Ive never had an issue with the Luminarcs having salt creep. they are a little dusty on the outside but thats about it. Your idea is a good one for the viewing panel. Im eventually going to do the same with a thick piece of molding that frames the viewing area. My set up is a bit tricky though..One half (office side) is going to be all woodwork and the living room side is going to have a white frame. I am going to use the same frame material...just stain one side of it so it matches the office...HOPEFULLY, I'll get around to it within a month..this so called quick project I told my wife is taking a bit longer than expected...gotta finish this sucker...maybe one day I will be lucky enough to be on TOTM.
