need advice on setting up geo kalk

I have a tunze top off system that I wanted to plumb into the geo 618 kalk reactor.

first attempt the hose on the tunze pump blew off
second attempt the reactor back siphoned into the reservoir
there is a check valve between the two that I am guess is backwards but I always thought that the tappered end faced the flow direction and the flatted end of that valve faced the origin source.

Am I wrong or is there a problem with that backflow valve or is there something else going on.

The height of the reservoir is about the same as the height of the sump and of the reactor.
there is a vertical climb of about 18" to go up and over into the geo (which is well within what the tunze pump is supposed to be able to handle)

any help would be great!

on my geo kalk reactor, I use the ATO to fill up a small container that is above the kalk reactor.

Then I let that gravity feed into the kalk reactor .... I have a ball valve on the output of the reactor that I let drip into my sump.

Thanks Rob, I think I just have a bad check valve. I can blow air through it without too much force but the kalk water came back through to the reserve fresh top off water.

I was just really wondering what others that use the tunze to geo use to link the two and if they have reverse siphon issues as well.

I plan on running a GEO Kalk reactor separate from my topoff. I'm going to feed it with a mj400 from the topoff reservoir and drip it into my sump and then have a separate floatswitch to feed topoff water from the same reservoir using a second MJ400....Kalk overdoses kinda scare me :-P

can air go through either direction??

Air/Water should only flow 1 way through a check valve or backflow device

that settles that then, It must be the check valve. its the first time it was ever used and it failed. Sweet

its no wonder so many knock them in their posts

what size is the check valve, is it barbed etc...and are you running freshwater through it? I can probably track down a check valve that will not fail

Dave,
I have mine hooked up like this.

The water is just siphoned from my top off container and controlled by an electric solenoid and a float valve. Very simple and safe.

I think that line is 1/4' id and the valve is barbed. If Dan has one I am just going to make the run up there. I have not picked up the new Coral magazine yet and reeflife has also been out for a couple weeks

Thank you though for the offer of digging one up for me.

Jason, I will have to check you picture out at home, the school server almost always blocks pictures from RC
