Need advice, switching tanks.

I've been keeping fish about a year and a half.
Are you running the UGF, or is it collecting dust in the garage?
I do respect your experience, but no. Keeping a hippo in a 90 is no more brag-worthy than keeping a Great Dane in a one bedroom. Can and should are two different things. And even if you do manage not to starve or worry the Great Dane to death in an apartment, recomending that others repeat your folly is irresponsible.

+1 on almost everything that you have said on this thread. There is a difference between surviving and thriving. People need to respect the requirements of these fish.

Keeping a fish alive and healthy is thriving. You people make no sense my friends fish is fat healthy and eats well and look beautiful if that isn't thriving I have no idea what is.

Your tang is probably under an immense amount of stress from being crammed in such a small tank. Time will tell. Tangs can do well short term in smaller tanks, but they require much larger tanks long term. I completely agree that 'rehoming' is just an excuse and most of the time this rehoming will never happen. I found this quote in Dmorty's signature. I hope he doesnt mind me posting it here.

Dmorty
Fish are not disposable commodities, but a worthwhile investment that can be maintained and enjoyed for many years, providing one is willing to take the time to understand their requirements and needs

so my stressed tang that is growing and healthy. that never had ich, never went though quarantine is unhappy because you say so. plus you have a crystal ball saying when i feel its to big or gets to nasty that i wont rehome it. well i guess i am wrong then. i dont know it all like the tang police. i guess its also impossible to have a nano reef tank too, except if your an expert. Of wait the reef police was wrong on that one too.

How long have you had this tang? How big is it?
Most educated reefers would tell you that a 57 corner is far too small for a blue tang. Most, if not all tangs are to large for a tank of that size. Im not sure where I said it was impossible to keep a nano tank? Its pretty simple; tangs very large tanks where they can swim freely without being stressed.
I scuba very often and have seen their behaviors in the wild and think that tang tank reccomendations should be DOUBLED or TRIPLED.

i have had my tang since june.
yes i will eventually have to re-home him. i see nothing wrong with keeping a baby fish in a smaller tank and then re-homing it. To say i wont or cant is judgemental on your part.
you might be right he probably will start beating up my kole tang, or clownfish or lytail antheis, or 2 fairy wrasses or my watchman goby (he is my favorite fish, what personality) when that happens i will act accordingly

Plus your point about scuba diving is silly at best. most fish swim over large areas on the reef and we still keep most of those fish in smallish tanks (yes a 250 gallon tank is small compared to what most fish swim on a reef) and wont even talk about sharks. also my friend has a 90 gallon high and has his hippo, plus 3 other tangs for 5 years plus.

IMO tank size reccomendations stay the same no matter the size of the fish. It is still the same fish. Buy and plan for what you have. Again, IMO the only fish that you have that are appropriately sized for your tank are the goby and clownfish. Once again, there is a difference between surviving and thriving.

i think my watchman goby ate my dotyback is that possible i mean i had the goby for 2 weeks, he eats anything that passes him. even at a piece of crazy glue that fell off of a rock. spit it out though

Ok I didn't mean to start a fight I just posted a photo of the tank to show my problem.

Let me re phrase my question, I know how to cycle a tank, and have started that process. I'm not worried about getting fish into the tank safely I have done this numerous times.

What I am trying to find out is what would be the best way to safely get the RBTA into the new tank as soon as possible. It could move the old tank for 6 mo. and wait for the new tank to mature but would rather not wait that long.

funny thing is i don't really have a hippo tank, only a kole tang. just was in a mood to start witht the tang police :)
