Need an Activated Carbon expert

Tanks for that dbare. I have not run into anyone, that I recall, that has used in a reactor

I am running my ROX 0.8 in a reactor. Down to my last batch and looking for more at a good price :D

sanjay.

Can't get a link to work correctly but bulkreefsupply.com has ROX 0.8 for what seems like a reasonable price $34.99 for one pound

Hey Boomer, found an old post of you and I think you still think ROX 0.8 is a Peat carbon..

"American Norit, Norit ROX 0.8. This stuff is an acid washed, extrude peat GAC that looks like broken mechanical pencil lead. The 0.8 means 0.8 mm is the diameter of the pellet"

I just looked back at Norit ROX website, and found this:

"NORIT ROX 0.8 Acid Washed Lignite Powdered Activated Carbon"

http://www.norit-americas.com/norit-rox08.html

Wouldn't that change the whole "best carbon" circle? I think it's the reason Norit have changed their Specs sheet and doesn't post Molasse anymore...

It is I have a container of it ;)

How can it be a powdered and extruded at the same time  Read what the data sheet says. That 0.8 means 0.8 mm in diameter

Data Sheet
NORIT ROX 0.8 is an acid washed extruded carbon, which offers both superior adsorption properties and an ultra high purity level.

I also talked to Norit a few months ago and it was peat. Other sites also show it as peat.

I'm sure it is an error as the site has been all redone. If you look elsewhere for it it is extruded peat. And if for the sake of argument they changed it to lignite it would be even better. Last year I finally found some numbers for lignite vs peat and lignite is better by the numbers, so it would be even better.

They have probably dropped the Molasses number as that seems to be the trend to use this number less than before. I don't know why as it tells what the macropores are. Maybe it did not get added to the new sheet. Mine has it on it.

This is the same as ROX only it is not acid washed and has the same error

NORIT ROY 0.8 Acid Washed Powered Activated Carbon

NORIT ROY 0.8 is an extruded carbon with superior adsorption properties, ultra high purity level and high mechanical strength. NORIT ROY 0.8 has been developed specifically for applications where low soluble silica is a critical issue such as high-pressure condensate systems and ultra-pure water production.

Powdered and extruded just means they take powder, compress it and extrude it in 0.8mm cylinder.

The same as Matrix carbon, but they only compress it.

I know how it is made

No, it is balled in a balling mill. You can not compress a 1-2 mm ball, the price would be through the roof if they did that way. Just think about it :)

I just called Norit and they just told me that link and others I pointed out are in error and it should not read "powdered or Lignite" . They also told me the carbons they make in their European plant in the Netherlands no long carry the "type" of GAC it is, i.e., Lignite, Peat, etc.

The Director is going to call me or e-mail me later today or tomorrow. I'm also having them check on why the Molasses # is gone, as it is on other GAC's and is that an error. The tech thanked me for for pointing them out :D

Ok, here it is

Thank you for letting us know about the problem with NORIT ROX 0.8 and NORIT RO 0.8. We just revised the whole website. The molasses number (EUR) was removed a year ago when. ROX production was changed from Klazienaveen to Zaandam, the Netherlands. ROX 0.8 is the same great product it has always been but with increased methylene blue and surface area.

Best regards,

Beth McCann

I may have a announcement later on a new GAC from Norit that *may be better then ROX  I'm waiting for the data from Beth :D

Well, you haves seen data sheets with MB #'s so get some and use it as a dye test to see how they adsorb it. You can also try some food coloring.
