Just got this as a wild collected piece that had been sitting in an LFS tank for several months and doing well.

I'm leaning towards humilis.

Suggestions on placement? Based on growth and where it was doing well in the LFS tank I've got it in reasonably high flow, and high just off center from a 250 MH, fairly high light.


Started searching around for care info and came upon another possible id Acropora monticulosa. What would be the distinguishing characteristics of each? Is humilis a bit more branching, and monticlosa more indiivdual branches rising from an encrusting plate?

The coralites in monticulosa are more arranges in almost straight line while humilis have more random coralites. The wild monticulosa also have thicker branches than humilis. JMO

With that placement I would be highly worried that either the hair algae or bubble algae will take it over and kill it off.

I'm not to worried, I have alot of other sps that are growing like weeds. I've found the source of the phosphates and have taken measures to eliminate it. BTW my NO3 is undetectable, and phosphates are .02 Hanna. Its just the continuous input was driving the algae.

Just FYI but nitrate will falsely read 0 when you have a large amount of macro algae in the tank but it is truely still there.

My hair algae is certainly doing a great job keeping my nutrient levels down. My CUC has kept the HA relatively in check atleast so that it isnt overgrowing stuff. The sps seem quite capable pushing the HA back as they encrust. there is a clear line of HA death like a halo around the sps encrusting base.
