Looks like some type of starfish? Is this a pest or beneficial?

Don't mind the smudges I tried to wipe it off lol

There are many species. Some are alright, some aren't. They never bothered me until the day I caught one munching away on a mushroom frag.

It really just depends on what species you have. From what I've read most are harmless and eat algae. Just keep an eye on it/them.

Most of the asterina you will encounter are harmless.

It's usually only a problem if they are allowed to multiply until the point of overrunning the tank.

I've spotted about 50 or so in my tank, and 6 months later, no problems yet.

I get them from time to time. Sometimes I can see 10 at a time and sometimes I can't find any. It depends on water quality and food source for them. There's a myth that the dark ones eat corals and the white ones are harmless. The ones I've had were white or light in color and I never saw them bother corals.
