need cooling fans

The fans on my canopy went out and wanted to know where I could get some reasonably priced.

I don't know what you had or what you want to spend, but I have 2 of these on my 75. They are thermostatically controlled and very quiet. Oh, they are also $40.00 each, but guaranteed not to sieze up in a SW environment

I got mine at Windydayz.Com I think that's the name of the site. They are sponsors on RC. A pair, with heat sensors and 3 speeds were aroung $28 if I remember right. Not super powerful, but they cool my 250w MH down 1.5-2 degrees.

Look at newegg.com (if I can put that). They have a ton of fans that are really quiet and move a lot of air. I know a lot of people who use them

You can purchase some cheap computer fans and an AC/DC Converter adapter of the same voltage, wire them together, and then mount them in the canopy.

Initially, I bought 2 $25.00 ac fans from an electrical supply. They sounded like an airplane taking off and within 6 months, had salt built up to the point that one of them rattled.

Travis is right for a low cost solution and I think the DC fans are quieter than the AC. Just do some checking before you settle on something. Once again I learned the hard way.

DC is MUCH quieter. I have an AC fan like Tony mentioned, and it is like a hurricane. But, it seems to push drastically more air. Now, if you want to go even cheaper than buying some DC fans, then do a little dumpster diving and pick up an old computer or computer case. Use the fans out of that. It's a huge benefit to live in a college town where all these students leaving for the semester throw away large quantities of good junk. I've pulled a couple computer shells out, and have gotten quite a few little fans. I'll be using these in my 2g cubes and on a few other small tanks.

What is the highest your tank temp can go before you need fans?

Are you talking spike or steady temperature? I would avoid anything over 84ºF as a relatively steady temperature, and anything above that for spikes. If you are getting spikes above that, you might want to check your heaters and fans. Personally, I try to stay at about Natural Sea Water range at 80-82ºF

Actually, I got a new dig thermometer and it was saying the tank went way high in during the day. I put my heater on the timer with my fug light to be on only at night. I moved the probe lower in the tank away from lights and it all seems to be better today. Will see what tomorrow brings. Once again proving; take it slow...think it through and use some common sense.

My tank stays in about the 76 to 80 range. It depends on who has messed with the house thermostat last. I have a family member that dosen't understand that putting the setting at 80 degrees won't make the furnace burn hotter just longer.

If you want to use DC computer fans I have about 50 AT power supplies in storage. I have $5 each in them. I will trade or give me 5 bucks and I will give you a cheap DC power source. You may have to get a switch though.
