fill out side but i'd definitely do the foam pad at least 1/4" to 1/2 styrofoam ah d trim neatly it should be fine

I would use a piece of insulating foam under it...after I check that it actually holds water outside.

Do you have the option of returning/exchanging the tank? If not then removing/reattaching the trim would prob be the best option. I dont like the foam idea on glass tanks, especially on large tanks.

+1. If I bought a new tank, I wouldn't be messing around with foam or other things like that.
