Hello fellow reefers I have a bit of a conundrum I need some guidance with I have 120 gallon tank I just acquired it came with a stand however the stand does not accommodate for sump which is what I want to build a this tank the dimensions are for the space in the stand is 16LX24HX15D
My understanding is that you want a sump that is 10% of your display tank however I've also seen that larger is better within reason so any suggestions on how I can create a sump for this large tank with the space provided attached is a picture of the stand and space I'm talking about.

I hate to say it, but your best bet is to scrap that stand or repurpose it and build/buy a new one that can better accommodate your needs. It doesn't really look like you have much to work with there at all.

I agree I would start over, but a viable option would be to use two small tanks and then plumb them together.

^^^What they said^^^

IMHO, plumbing two small tanks together will end up being more trouble than it's worth.

That, and the fact that the two center supports have the wood grain running in opposite directions would tip my (controlled?) OCD right over the edge.

Start over. I tried 2 tanks plumbed together on my old set up. Turned out I had to run a drain to each sump to keep them from either overflowing or running dry. Complete pain in the butt.

Thanks fellow reefers for the the feedback i thought about the two tank plumbed but i feared what biecacka stated there would be overflow issues. The more i stared at the stand and the wife thinking i was going crazy i relized i would have to build my own stand

There is a great thread on he forum in DIY section on building a stand. I used it to build mine.

Also, there is no formula for size of sump. It can be as small as just enough space for your equipment and up to as large as you want. I've seen a setup where the sump was actually 10 times the size of the main display!
