So I am setting up my first large tank with a sump and I had bubbles gurgling about every 6 six seconds from my flow max to sump. I was told to put in a valve to slow my pump rate, and I did, which has now cured the problem. Now I hardly have any flow rate from my pump and very low circulation in the tank. What am I missing here???

Many "drain" systems are simply inferior and low flow rates are required to keep them noise/bubble free..
I'm not sure what a "flow max" is so I can't help offer suggestions to allow you to run higher flow rates..
In general though you only need like 3x display tank volume in GPH of flow through the sump (3x-10x recommended range).. What do you have now?
The rest of the flow in a tank should be from powerheads..
