i have a 30 gal 4 month old tank with a 10 gal sump/refugium. i have developed a hair algae problem that is developing into a real problem i have used a product called marine SAT by kent. it didn't seem to work that great. i have recently purchased a phosphate reactor to remove any extra phosphate. i hear this will help but how do i remove the exhisting hair algae. Also can the addition of DT's phytoplankton cause hair algae or is this just a rumor.

I would start by manually removing all the HA that I could pull out with my fingers, then use the phosphate reactor. This way you don't have a HA die off to help feed another algae bloom.

What are you adding the DT's to the tank for?

Muskafan84, When I first started I had the same problem. The answer is manually remove it, good water flow and keep your water clean. Get some phosfate remover like phosoban and this helps some. Frequent water changes help and watch how much food you feed the tank, you might be over feeding alittle and this results in increased growth. Be patient nothing good in this hobbie happens fast. Good luck. pwf
