Need Help 'hit And Run'

I was a victim of a hit and run a couple months ago near my work north of downtown. I got sideswiped and they did a u-turn and went down an alley. I started to follow them and then decided not to - in that part of town there was no way they had insurance and the car was probably stolen.

I didn't bother to file a police report and my insurance took care of it.

If I had been able to get a license plate there is no way I wouldn't have allowed the police to take care of it. I work hard for my money and don't like spending it fixing a car crash that wasn't my fault.

Good luck with your situation.

-Mike

You should just go the police route. It should not affect your rates as a hit and run is clearly not your fault. Also you have several witnesses.

Got to agree, I'd call the cops and my insurance company. If the police don't or won't find them, the insurance company will. If they hit me and stayed put, we exchanged info, I had witness names and contact info, I might let them slide. But hit and run?!? Screw them...

the only way to find out is to either pay a hefty price online (i can show you some reliable sights) or know a friend who is a cop and is willing to run it. but the fact of the matter is, like everyone on here has said, you should not be handling this. it is a situation that you can only make worse by finding this guy yourself. he will simply call you crazy and tell you that never happened. even with the police involved this late there is no sure fire way to make this happen it needed to happen immediately, and if anything is going to be done about it the easiest way is to go straight to the police.

I too cannot come up with any positives to you finding them yourself. If they didn't stick around after the hit, they are likely not gonna help. Let the po po do their job.

Turn it in to the police and call your insurance my wife was involved in a hit and run my insurance paid for it and it didnt hurt my rates at all... plus if they catch him they will go after him to get the money and even return your deductible to you if they collect

I've been involved in a hit 'n' run.

After a high speed chase, I trapped him at the end of a no outlet street, then I found out he had no insurance, or drivers license. I took pictures, pulled all the cars info, and pocketed the passengers drivers license. The next day I handed it over to the police, explaining that I was not trying to get someone locked up, and I did not want to involve my insurance either. The police officer got hold of the guy, and told the other driver and me that if he (crazy driver) would/could not settle with me, I could press charges.

I got four estimates for the damage (through out the top and bottom), I let him choose between the two. Then the driver paid me with a check one week later.

The kicker is, this guy had a baby in the car... Moron!

If the police WERE called immediately as you stated they were, why did they not come to the scene and do a report? That's pretty much standard policy everywhere that I know of. Something's missing here.

do you not know how to read the police were called immediately by my wittnesses now back to the original thread if you can't help the cituation go to your own forum in ind. Thanks

Nowhere did you state they were called immediately. You stated after you got home you called the police. Nowhere does it state either that the police were called immediately by the witnesses either.

I'm thinking something's fishy here. None of the original poster's thread makes any sense. Hiding something.

Agree with Freed... something not smelling right with you (bigcasino). You did say that police were called when YOU got home, but no mention of the witnesses. Plus, the longer you wait to report this, the harder it will be for you. Does your insurance agent at least know about the incident? Did you take pix immediately? Was paperwork done at the PD? If nothing has been properly documented, you will then be questioned when you try to get $$. Witnesses can help your case, but they got info for you so that you could press charges. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. They wanted to help you get the criminal the consequences he/she deserves. Your not wanting to get the person in trouble doesn't make sense to any of us, I think, because you are contradicting yourself. You want the person to pay for what they did to you, but you don't want them to be responsible for what they did to you?

So much more to say to you, but I think that you may get the drift. I don't think you will have any luck unless you do the proper paperwork. Very rarely will you get a hit-n-runner to cough up $$ and be honest. Without cops, they may get defensive or you just wouldn't find them. At least contact your insurance agent and see if they can find the criminal to cough up the $$ without any worry of cops.

Freed your killing me go back to the begining and open your eyes you might just catch that I said when I got home I called then it says the wittnesses also called well figure it out they called immedetly they were also the ones to give me the police # for the area precinct and told me what the police had said to them I didn't think I would have to debate the issue cause you don't have a life enough to just say screw trying to find them let the cops do there job or simply good luck trying to find that site that you were unaware of such a site

To others put a call into the ins company expect a call tommorow will follow my agents advise as I do have on my policy of uninsured motorist

Just some things to keep in mind:

Leaving the scene of an accident is felony in Missouri.

Different departments have different policies regarding "delayed" accident reports. Most wont do them. A delayed report is one where a significant time has elapsed between the accident and the time the police are called. If you wait a few hours to call, how are we to know you havent cleaned things up and potentially detroyed evidence that you were responsible for the accident?

There is no website where you can look up someone else's license plate.

giggalalittl whatever go to the begining, wow what a revalation keep sniffin that chemestry set
Let's put our big boy pants on and be civial to the people YOU ASKED to help. You have the info you were looking for, no such site. Good thing too, I wouldn't want some stalker get my wife's license plate and find where she lives. I know you are upset that it happened. You have every right to be. But don't take it out on the people that had nothing to do with it.

Seriously, don't think any accident happened. Just wants to know how to find someone via a license plate. EVERYONE knows to call the cops immediately when an accident happens on public streets so an official report will be made. IF that would have taken place this thread wouldn't be here and there would be someone already arrested and in custody.

I read the rest of this thread and the people's court entrance song started playing in my head...kind of weird...ok

mental picture Glenn walking around swating flies that won't go away. sorry

Later

ok... now this is bull!! I know glen and i know him well he wouldn't ever lie about something like this and even if it was a made up story why would he even waste his time asking around on here? i seen his jeep the night it happened. i heard the whole story from him in person. from the way explained it there was absolutely nothing he could do at the time to stop the lady that hit him. also to add something to this glenn is a nice guy and doesnt like to see people under hard times or get into trouble. he is the type of guy that would try to help keep someone out of trouble. not saying that he would hide out a fugitive or anything just that hes a nice guy that likes to help people out. with that added you have no right to try to determine who is lieing and who isnt, and furthermore like he said if you cant help and all you want to do is run your mouth get off his thread. find something a little more respectable to do in your spare time instead of tick people off.
