first off I'm new here so hello lol. I just purchased a 150 gallon reef setup and I need a little help identifying some of the parts. And also would like any input/advise from any of you experienced reefers on this forum. I'll post some pics of the purchase. Just wondering what type/brand of protein skimmer I have and also if anyone knows what kind of sump I have and what brand it is. I want to set up up where it is effective and use all the chambers. Thanks !

I don't see a protein skimmer in the picture! Your sump is an old school wet/dry type sump which is not in favor these days in marine aquariums because they tend to increase the nitrates in a tank. If you are handy you could make modifications to the sump to make it suitable for saltwater use.

What thegrun said.

The blue things are bioballs. The problem with them is that they are so efficient at breaking waste down to nitrate that you can easily end up with a nitrate issue. They are also infamous for trapping detritus further increasing the nitrate problem.

Live rock is a very efficient (and natural) method of biological filtration. Read the stickies at the top of this forum for a boatload of very good advice.

I am new to the hobby but I can say I have done a lot of research on this and the bio balls should go. I am using a wet/dry along with my refuge however I will be using live rock instead

Agreed that the bio-balls should go. As far as skimmers go for your application, there are tons of them out there. LifeReef, Reef Octopus, Bubble Magus, it really is just deciding on exactly what you need and what you want to spend. They all accomplish pretty much the same goal but have some differences in quality and functionality.
