Hey guys,
Just can't wait and had order some dwarf seahorses from a seller fro Florida, but my newly set up tank just up and running on Wednesday, now I'm little bid worry when the SH come next week, are they gonna be alright? anyone has a cycled sponge filter can sell to me? Thanks

Alex

Yikes that doesn't sound good. From what I've heard, sea horses require very specialized care and definitely will not do well in a tank that is in mid cycle. Do you still have a chance to cancel that order or has it shipped yet?

If your tank was just set up on Wednesday, then your ammonia will spike in about a week and your nitrites a week or so later. Not much can survive that.

If this is your first ever tank, then sea horses might not be the best choice. You need to do some research my friend.

so inpatient aren't you ....I hope you can cancel your order and wait till that tank is cycled. Please read and get informed before you buy anything

Im doing a water change tommorow, around 20g, you can have 20g of cycled reef water if you want. Ill get it from the display so it will be cleaner then getting it from the sump.

Hi Sam,
Please save me the water, pm'ed you my number. I appreciated.

The other thing you need to think about is that sea horses basically need a tank to themselves because they're so slow moving and docile. If you put them in with a bunch of fast moving, hungry fish, they will never have a chance to get any food.

Also, they can't handle tanks with high flow but at the same time high flow is basically a requirement for most reef tanks. So your choice of coral will be limited.

For the most part, every sea horse tank I've ever seen was a nano with the seahorses, some soft corals and slow, bottom feeding fish like mandarins, sand sifting gobies etc. In other words, it's very advanced reefkeeping because these animals are all hard to care for.

If you're just starting out in reefkeeping, then I would suggest easier fish like clowns, wrasses etc.

How big is your tank and what is your plan for it?

saltwater from cycled tank is good, but not good enough to cycle your tank... you need the bacteria in the rocks, sand etc, to grow, and no amount of cycled water will fix that overnight... cycle takes time, be patient, let it do its thing, and then get your horses.

If u are looking for live rock. I have a couple of lbs u can have, I also run bioballs in one of my tanks, u can have a couple that have established bacteria. I am located in Downey and should be home around 7pm.

But if he gets some established LR or sponge filter from someone else's tank, the cycle will be brief to none, correct? I started my tank with LR from another reefer's tank and there was no appreciable cycle; all of the corals that were already on the rocks are still doing great! I still didn't add anything for a month, though.

That's correct. Last week I set up 2 quarantine tanks and I got a bunch of bioballs from a tank that has been up for a year and 1/2 and put it into an hob filter, with 48 hour aged salt water, put 2 clownfish in the tank and didn't get a cycle. I buy the seachem alert badges to c if any ammonia is detected and haven't had to do a water change. Only thing is I cut down to feeding once a day instead of three times a day.
