Ok so im starting the upgrading process. new controller, APEX, new canopy for LEDS and i am going to remove the K4 units from my 150g DT and opt for a better less noisey MP40's... Well i thought..
I have a guy offering me a heck of a day. 850 shipped for two brand new units. My question to my peps...

I see a lot of bad reviews on the noise these things make but all of those reviews are from 2-3 years ago and i cant find anything current on the noise level these things put out.

Are these noisy? The new ones? Am i wasting precious $$ thinking they will be virtually silent? I plan on running them on 60-70% because my tank doesn't need them to run at max...
Chime in team, what do you think? Should i just stay with the K4's

Silent seems to be subjective. You should go listen to some in person before you spend the money. Remember the motor is outside and the noise you would hear is the motor. Submerged powerheads have a volume of water to deaden and muffle the sound. If you think a K4 is noisy, you will find a Vortech to be like a jet airplane.

I have 2 MP60s and 1 MP40...I run them all at about 75%, and IMO the fans on my LED units are the only noise, I hear.

Proper alignment is key to their noise level.

i have an mp40 on my 90 and while it is not silent what little noise it does make can be overlooked because of the effectiveness of the pump. with an external motor i dont beleive there is a way to make it completely silent. if the rest of your system is silent you will notice it more. as far as tunze goes i have no experience but hear many good things.

i have worked vigorously to make the tank and silent as possible. The only sounds are from the reeflo snapper ( small hum) and the BKmini200 pump(small hum also) One of my K4's is alot louder than the other because we had a power outage and the thing blew off the front guard and the propeller came out- damaged it i think. So the humm from it is a little audible to me. I figure if i run them close to 70% (mp40wes) they would be virtually dead silent, compared to the hum of the bad K4

I don't think you will be happy. My vortex is the loudest thing on my tank.

The noise all depends on alignment, what program its on, and how high its set. I think the little noise is worth it.

My vortech's are not noisy at all. I run them at 75-80%; i suppose if i were to ramp them up to full speed i'd hear something.
One of the best investments i have made for my tank, easy.

man- its difficult to judge- it seems like 50/50--- im gunna wait it out till tomorrow morning and the pull the trigger- based off the observation from this thread of course.

i have both tunzes and vortech mp40.. the mp40 blows away the performance of the tunzes.. the tunzes where a waste of cash imo thier flow is very subtle and not powerful enough to make even a 1/2" wave in my tank while the single vortech can make a 3/4" to 1" wave in my tank by it self.. pretty funny that 1 mp40 outperforms 2 tunze 6055's and a tunze mini wavebox..
my vortech mp40 is actually more silent than my tunzes. my tunzes make clicking noises when i program them thru my apex to make waves..

The whining noise is the motor. Perfectly aligned you will still hear that. I have 2 MP40's on my tank. They run at 80%. I do hear the motors when they get to the higher speeds, but it doesn't bother me. I wouldn't call them loud at all, but you do hear them.
That said, I wouldn't trade my MP40's for any other power head.
