so i bought a new 100gallon tank and i need to move everything from my 60. havent brought the new tank home yet so nothings set up. i need to know the proper way to start this project. also i need to know if it can be done in a day and i live in an apartment so not much room to work. thanks for the help

If you have enough water made, same sg and temp, it can be done in a few hours no problem. Just don't add new rock or it will cause a cycle.

will it be a problem to add live rock later on down the road or will that mess everything up. will i have to put all my livestock in bags and float them like when i first bought them.

If you have a sandbed that you're moving you're probably foing to get some sort of small cycle. To be safe, it wouldn't be a bad idea to set up a small tank for fish and corals for the first week or 2 (just a cheap 20 gallon or even a rubbermaid container with some kind of filter would work). I transported my 60 gallon 80 miles with no cycle but I made sure to keep the sandbed undisturbed and keep all of the rock underwater (the former tank water) for the whole trip.

um im getting an asm g2 protein skimmer. the thing is i have a few big fish that wouldnt fit in a 20 gallon that was why i upgraded. livestock marine beta, maroon clown, rabbitfish, yellow damsel,v tailed grouper, and some sort of blenny. what if i did a few consistant waterchanges at the beggining any suggestions because i really need to do this all in one day

With water changes you should be fine just check you parameters daily and keep a close eye on your livestock

Its different each time you move tank but I have done it a few times and added new LR with no problems. The LR was already cured though. This is a must if you add new LR. I have also transfered sandbeds but I have never had deep sandbeds, so there was not too much risk. Do you have a deep or shallow sandbed to move?

Whatever you do, just make sure you really monitor things and be prepared to act if something is out of whack.

Good luck!

regardless if you sandbed is deep or shallow.....if it is a year or more old (or even less)just take the opportunity to replace it with new dry sand. Get yourself a nice clean new sandbed and zero risk to the critters you are planning on adding shortly after set up

my sand bed is about 2 to 3 inches. im going to have to get new sand since im going from a 60 to a 100 gallon tank the only thing is that i dont want to lose any of the pods and other critters in my sand plus if i dont use my old sand ill have to buy double the old sand. heres what i was hoping i could do but am not sure. i wanted to takeout 30 gallons of water from my old tank and add it to my new tank along with the new sand. then add some new live rock and the rest of the new water. then let leave it for a day then add the old live rock and my coral (do i have to bag the coral and float the bags) i have soft coral hard coral tube anemone and blue sponge. Then add the fish (should i bag the fish) only problem is can i add the old sand after all the rest of the tank mates are added. should i add it when the fish are in the bags id really have to just toss the sand

I would keep a few cups of old sand to seed new sand.
If you are moving across the room, you can put live stock in 5g buckets and drip acclimate (quickly), then add. Just dump water from buckets back into 100g.
But in all honesty, I would buy new sand, it will have no detritus and will soon be seeded and best of all--you don't have to worry about stirring up a cycle w/ all the nutrients that will be released w/ old sand.
I would only add 1 or 2 pieces of new LR at a time (every month) to avoid a possible crash.

yea im not really into the reef aquariums are mostly rock id like to have the back with rock then sand up front with plenty of swimming room. im debating on whether or not to get rid of my black and gold tailed damsel but i think my tanks pretty aggressive. i have a marine betta, maroon clown, rabbit fish, v tailed grouper and the damsel i dont think these fish will have a problm changing tanks since ive heard they are pretty hardy

someone at the fish store told me not to use all live sand they told me one bag of live sand then the rest regular sand anyone ever hear not to use all live

i say dont use ANY live

it will become live soon enough on its own. seed it with a cup or two if you must, but to be honest , in this day and age with as many pests as there are I dont want anybody elses sand either
