Hi there it seems that I like to make all my marine products online orders from you guys and would like some help on getting some equipment for my koi pond...

Well its a 40,000g Koi pond with about 100 assorted koi from 6" to 12" and about 10 koi in the 20" plus range...

Currently I run a 5hp pump with several outputs trough out the pond...

Is there any type of mechanical filter you guys recomend? how about UV filters, are they worth it in koi ponds?

I want to get rid of the bad smell the pond is producing right now, is there any additive I can add to neutralize it? would the UV work for that?

THX in advance...

Hi,

To be honest, most of us at PA are reefers and have very little if any experience with ponds. I have a small pond (120g) and use only a UV and plants for filtration. The water stays clear and I don't have any odors. Especially now.......... it's frozen.:D

Perhaps some day we will enter the koi pond arena. A reef pond would be fun to try also.

Hey, kmu, I am not a PA employee but I do work in a LFS in Muncie, IN that deals with ponds, one thing you need to check on is your water parameters in your pond. That sounds like you have a good amount of flow, which is one key to keeping it clean, the next step to take is to get a good variety of differant plants in there to help pull out organics in the pond. If you are looking at mecanical filters I recomend a wet-dry type setup. I have had some people around here set up ones out of old 5-gallon buckets that are filled with some bio-balls or bio-material. As far as UV goes, I really like running it on ponds and think it is very helpful in getting out many contaminates. Hope this helps out some. I think one of the keys is plant life and water movement. I would check out some guys in the other foreums I think they are into this stuff and might be able to give you better advice I just deal with it minorly. Oh yeah one thing I think that works fairly well is barley straw. Ask around at local pond shops and they should be able to help ya out.

I just realized the size of your pond, DAMN that is a lot bigger then I am used to dealing with.:p but I still think the same principles apply to it. I would look around for some Koi boards I am sure there are some nice ones.
