Been looking doing a lot of research and I've been looking at the ecoxotic but it all comes down a little to pricey, wanted to see if the was something cheaper that will still be good for the pricE? or any other led lights that you guys recommend

Well I will P*ss some people off but if I had to go back and pick a light I would have stayed away from boost led. Mine broke after 4 months. (Went back to my stock lighting LOL). Will be sending some pics soon to see what boost LED can do for me but in the mean time choose carefully...BC if you dont have a backup light you might not have a tank at all........So what I am trying to say is you get what you pay for in this hobby (lifestyle)

I just gutted an old current satellite fixture and put in a diy kit from rapidled.

Its very easy, they have some new 700ma drivers and a new solder-less kit coming here soon.

For under 200 bucks I feel I got a fixture that will grow anything I want and can go from a color temp from 5k to 20k with the turn a knob or two.

I highly suggest going this route especially if you want to cut cost but not quality.

Thanks I heard of the diy kit it just seemed kind of fishy that it was so cheap, ill research on it, how long have you had it for? and have you had any problems with it?

If you search the forum for a thread called "Chinese led lights" a lot of people have had success with the lights mentioned there. Depending on options you can get a set for under $200 shipped.

P.s. it's over 115 pages long but you can find people's links through out the entire thread.

The four factors of LEDS are what current are they driven at, the spread they give, the amount of heat they produce for the heatsink area, and dimmability.

Im in the process of setting up a 2.5gal and I have gone with gu10 socket LED bulbs from china. There is a thread on a different forum about having more than a years success with them with correct PAR values and growing SPS. They are about $4.50 a piece and on my 2.5 gal Im using 3 on a 55g someone I remember was using 22 ($100). Also rapidled seems to be a good company I have some friends who are using their LEDS and are having success with them. But the reason we use LEDS is for efficiency and long bulb life which really has to do with HEAT and its dissipation. The bulbs I mentioned before are ALL in ONES so all you have to do is wire them into an extension cord parallel not series. Or check out the thread that jvdub20 mentioned as they have examples of larger arrays from china though I cannot attest to the quality of any of them. I would try to stay away from CREE if you can as it will save you alot of money, Epistar and Brightlux can work just as well for half the price or less as not everyone needs a Ferrari in the garage when Honda will work.
