Need help setting up a clam only tank

I recently purchased a 29 gal tank from a friend and want to turn it into a clam only tank. The tank is currently stocked with softies and a couple of wrasses. My friend had the tank set up about 4 months before I got it and I have had a month or so. My plan is to remove the corals and keep the fish in there. The lighting on the tank is 2x175 watt metal halide bulbs. Would this be enough light for any clam? Is this tank big enough for 4 or more clams? I also have hang on refugium and skimmer. Can I eliminate the skimmer without having any problems? Should I keep them in the sandbed or on some tonga slab rock I have? Sorry for all the questions. Thanks

your tank is 18" deep? then as long as you use a lower k bulb ( not 20k ) you should be fine. here is a link to a really good lighting requirements thread.

depends on which type of clams you are keeping, i believe they talk about sizes in the link i posted above.

either one, it's your preference. but if you put them on the slab they can / will attach, making it harder to move them later. what a lot of use do is place them on a small rock to attach to, so they can be moved later with having to cut their byssal thread. even on the sand they can reach right through to the glass below and attach.
