Need Help Today Please!!

I'm going to buy a return pump for my sump today. this is the first time buying a pump for my new reef. My lfs has reccomended a quiet one 4000 HH. I will have a 4' head with aprox 6-7 90 degree bends. This is a 55gal tank. I want at least 500 gph flow. 9 gal sump. Who has experience with these pumps. Who would reccomend something else , My orriginal plan was to go with a via aqua 3600. Thanks for your help.

I'd go with an eheim 1260 for that kind of flow. It is very quiet, handles head well, and is rock solid.

I love the Quiet One pumps, I have 3 running right now, 2 (3000,4000)internally and one (the 6000) external on a closed loop.

They are cheaper than most pumps, dont use as much wattage to run, run cool run internal or external, quiet, and give great flow and performance.

If you want atleast 500 GPH the 4000 HH is 980GPH, the 3000 is 780.


I would reccomend one, There has been problems with a few of them not wanting to re start, but everything has its problems here and there.
Quiet one will refund your money or replace the pump for free if s problem does arise.

I would NOT run an internal/external pump externally in any system if I could help it. The only thing holding the water in on these type of pumps is a rubber gasket. (Imagine what will happen to your tank when the gasket gets old and cracks or a bit of debris tears it up and breaks it.)

Which brings us to the next problem with ALL internal/external pumps - heat transfer. There is a lot of waste energy from pumps that is converted into heat, which is transfered to your tank, and heats the water. This may or may not be an issue for you depending on your tank temperature and equipment.

I don't believe that the Quiet One pumps are very energy efficient, but I could be wrong - I've never owned one. I like the E-heims because they don't use much electricty and are more efficient = less heat transfer. It just depends on your situation.

The Quiet One may be a great choice for you (or it may just be what pump your LFS sells) but you should be aware of the draw backs before you buy one. I run an E-heim 1262 personally. At a minimum you should price shop on one of big on-line stores like MarineDepot.com before you buy.

I have ViaAqua 2600 and very happy with it. Real quite, the same level as my eheim 1260. but at a fraction of cost. (Less power too) I also had ViaAqua 4900 but turned out to be too loud for the living room. Make sure your overflow can handle 500GPH. I have dual AGA Overflow rated at 600GPH each. Anything more than half that rate is too loud for my living room. Really loud. Right now i decided to go with eheim 1260 for the dual overflow, some 5feet up, 2 90degree elbows. What you have in your sump that need such high flow rate?

Is there anyway you could eliminate any of those 90 degree bends? 6-7 sure sounds like a bunch to me.

yeah, I did eliminate some by leaving out a uv sterilizer I was going to pick up at Lowe's. It was an 18w pond sterlilizer. I thought there were too many bends too. I'll just wait and get an in line sterilizer at a latter time. Sooo, that puts the bends down to 4 or less depending on what type of tubing I use from the pump, either rigid pvc or flexible vinyl tubing. The water output going into the tank will need to be pvc. I did end up going with a quiet one 4000 HH. Very quiet, very little heat transference AND a bonus, It's smaller than the via aqua that I was going to go with which leaves me more room for the refuge. Thanks for all of your input.
