For what it's worth I really like ceramic tile and it is the ultimate in aquarium-resistant finishes. One thing that I've heard several people try is to put a pond-liner in their sump to catch any spilles. This vinyl sheeting is not terribly expensive and can be found at Lowe's or Home Depot. Just glue it into your stand and run it a good 6" or su up the sides. This should catch almost all of the leaks unless you have a complete tank blow-out.
I would have reservations about "fixing" the 180 if you had an over-flow box blow out and drain the entire tank. It seems like there's a realistic chance that the other seems may be weakened as well.
The lfs guy just suggested a pond liner today! I like the idea of setting the sump in a sheet metal or plastic tray with a drain to the outside. I'm going to do one or the other. We've decieded against ceramic tile because of noise.
