Hi all, I've actually recently (1 year) been back into my reef tank. All was going good until I found a sponge like thing spreading over the LR and killing my zoos, shrooms, and clam. I don't have access to a camera right now but should be able to get a picture in the next couple of days. Please reference the pictures of #2 from the first post at

This appears to be what I have and I'm still at a loss of what it may be after reading this post. Please help!!!! Thanks.

It's a sponge like the people said. Beyond that you would have to look at the spicules under a microscope and even then sponge ID is nearly impossible.

Definitely a sponge. I have 7 or 8 different kinds in refugiums. If you have a fuge, try to separate your livestock from it and put it in their. You'll be amazed at how much waste they absorb.

Sponge for sure.
One thing to try is simply removing the rock from your tank for a little while (10 minutes or so). The zoas on there will handle that just fine. Many times sponges will die back after air exposure- doesnt Always work, but its a cheap, safe thing to attempt.

I've had something similar, but very much better behaved. Mine was blue---I now have a recurrence of it, and it looked like veins overlying my rock. Someone suggested it was not actually a sponge but a different life form, something starting with bry---that I cannot for the life of me remember, and that it was like sponge, but not.
