Me and my friend want to drill our tanks instead of having those big overflows.

he has a 29

i need 4 1" bulkheads

also need the hole saw.

and anyone that has any tips

THANKS

Did you guys look at Savko? I would think they would have all of your possible plumbing needs. I drove an hour and a half to go there for bulkheads.
I am sure someone would have a saw you could use as well. Give the thread a little time and someone will chime in.

On smaller tanks I've had really good luck using a dremel tool with a tile bit. It doesn't come out as smooth as a hole saw but works ok with a Uniseal.
If you do a search on the RC diy forum you can find instructions on how to do this.

I have a hole saw for 1" pipes that I'll sell for $5. I used it to drill 2 holes.

fyi...for 1" pipe, there 2 types - schedule 40 and schedule 80. schedule 40 is regular duty (and cheaper); schedule 80 is heavy duty (and more expensive/harder to cut). anyway, you need to decide which bulkhead you want (1" regular duty or 1" heavy duty) because the hole sizes are different. i used the regular duty ones and I've had no problems after 2 years of use.

there is a chart here with both bulkheads and you can see the hole size is different: http://www.savko.com/portal/bulkhead.asp
you'll probably have to go buy the bulkheads from Savko because lowes/home depot don't normally stock them.

Well said jdircksen, you will want to make sure the bulkhead is matched to the hole saw.

I recently bought the Dart Overflow Kit from Glass-holes.com for my 210g build and have been very happy with it.
The kit included:
acrylic overflow box with teeth and baffle
2 2" bulkheads plus 4 gaskets
Matched size hole saw
Threaded street elbows
Rubber tube for gurgle reduction

They also sell all of the parts individually.

Savko is a great source for plumbing parts. I am not sure if they stock the hole saws.

When drilling the 210g I stopped every few minutes and dipped the hole saw in water to keep it wet. I did it this way because I was drilling the tank with the bit vertical.

If drilling horizontal you can build a damn with plumbers putty to hold the water.

Put duct tape on the bottom side. this keep the glass plug in place until you are through all the way around and helps to reduce chipping.

When you get to the last little bit go very slowly to reduce chipping as well. You will always have a little bit, but you can minimize it by using light pressure and letting the bit do the work at the end.

I've heard good things about Glass-holes.com. I got my hole saws from http://www.richontools.com/catalog/i174.html and my bulkheads from Phishy Business. A 45mm saw was under $6 shipped. The biggest drawback was about 2 weeks shipping time, on the other hand when I initially ordered I goofed. The next morning I sent an email and he upgraded my order to the correct saw I needed N/C. The difference was only a buck or so but I thought it was a nice gesture.

I drilled some holes with a Dremel too. Believe me, the hole saw is the way to go! Also, make sure the tanks aren't tempered!!!

BTW - One saw will drill a lot of holes so no worries there, just keep a little water on it when you're drilling.

Give me a couple weeks and I'll have a hole saw and bulkheads, $15 for the hole saw, and $14 each for 1" sch 40 bulkheads (slip by thread)...

Better yet I'll sell you my used 45mm hole saw for $12 and $5 shipping and I'll keep the new one:D
