Need help with Filtration

I need some advice here. How important is mechanical filtration? I have a sump with a skimmer and a filter pad on top running water from tank into the drip chamber. I also have a sponge in my over flow box. I would like to convert my drip chamber of my sump into a fuge, but I would lose that filter pad in the process, because I would think the filter holder would need to go in order to have a light on top. Or would a light to the side work, and leave the top alone and keep the pad in place? Any thoughts on this would be great!!

Lots of people don't use mechanical filtration at all, but I am not one of them. You can use a filter sock for mechanical, it seems like a good solution for you.
