Need help with Montiporas

Fir what ever reason I just can't seem to keep montiporas in my tank. I can grow acros just fine and I don't see any pest of any sort in my tank. I even went half a year with no montis and they still tend to die off after a week or so. They're in medium to low light. When I placed some in high they just bleach out. My parameters are Alk-9 Calc 400-420 Mag-1380-1450. Any suggestions??

How are your nitrates? I had similar issues with nitrates at 0 for a while and had to dose KNO3. Also fwiw I'd never start new corals anywhere other than the sandbed, asking for trouble especially if you have bleaching issues already.

Most people have the opposite problem, they do good with montis but not acros.

Besides nudis, only two things have affected montis in my system. First is too low nutients, and second is alk swings.

I just commented in someone else's thread that I just got rid of almost all my montis because uncontrolled growth was eating up alk, cal, and space.

I do believe that montis did better in my tank when I kept higher kelvin [more blue] lighting, gentle current, some nutrients, and stable alk.

I had the same issue about a year ago. I found that black bugs were eating my montipora. The montipora would look good for a week and then they would show signs of stress, and then deteriorate from there. I did a interceptor regimen to get rid of them. On the freshly dead skeleton, look for black moving specs. They are about the size of a red bug.

I have mostly monti's and the growth is a bit on the slow side but doing ok. My lighting is about medium depending on the particular coral. My nutrients are higher though with nitrates not moving from around 30 to 40 ppm. Phosphorus anywhere from .05 to 1.0. Alkalinity 8.6.

I too have a problem with them growing too fast... in order to give you an accurate recommendation we would need more information about the system like size of tank, feeding regiment, fish load, nutrient levels etc..

I haven't seen any type of bugs, but my nitrates have been hanging low lately

That would be my guess. The chances of having monti-eating bugs that didn't affect anything after having no montis in the tank for that long is right around 0%.
