Need Help With New Lights

Hi All,


I got a set of lights from my wife (That's something you don't hear much on here LOL!!!).

New Lights

New 2009 SS Model

48" 500W Aquarium Metal Halide System

Dimension: 48" X 8" X 2 1/2" ( Max lenght with leg 48 3/4". )

* High end Metal Halide System for saltwater / reef aquarium use.
* Sleek Aluminium Housing in black finish.
* Germen made high quality light reflector.
* 6x Dual Lunar LEDs Pre-out.
* Built-in heavy duty fan
* Individual ON/OFF power switches.
* Individual power cords for timer setup.

# 2x 250w Double ended 15000K MH Bulb.
# 12x Odyssea Blue Moon Lunar LED bulbs.

Anyone have these, or thoughts/opinions on what I can keep with these lights? I am doing my homework but wanted to hear what the general consensus was here.

odyssea fixtures are excellent for there price, i just purchased one very similar

Pending your tank depth, water quality (clarity), chemistry, and flow, anything light demanding should be fine under those. With a deeper tank, keep the light lovers higher in the tank. Congratulations on the new setup.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the lunar LED's are strictly cosmetic and do nothing for corals.

I was also considering sticking my PC actinics under the canopy that I'm making as well (I think I can fit it all in there). That sound about right?

Well I think I have found a problem with the new lights...

Just turned them on for the first time and once they warmed up, all I could think was, "Well, If I get out of reef keeping I can always get a job doing movie premiers or maybe Bat Signal operator..."

Holy Hannah those things are @#$'ing BRIGHT!

Shortly after getting I got my vision back, the lights just went off. I waited about 20 min and decided to try them again (now wearing sun glasses this time), and after 10 min just one popped off. The third try they stayed on 15 min before I had to leave. Will try them again when I get back home.

They have some sort of break-in period? Or is there some sort of internal hardware problem? There was some very minor damage, and I thought it was cosmetic at the time. Now, I not so sure.

yes leds are not benefitting coral - but they help too with light transition so your tank does not go from bright to nothing - fish can get spooked and find the carpet - its better to have a transition of light and the Leds help and they also make nice moonlights

Many run just the MH - I did with 20k bulbs - sorry you are having trouble with these - perhaps a call to the vendor will help

many would say that you get what you pay for and the fixture for that price is a bit low and you should also decide if it is safe - I can only imagine, for that price, something about it must be of lesser quality

i am pretty sure, when I was doing some searches that there may be issues with how safe this fixture is - good idea you are asking - maybe they were talking about another one but fires were mentioned - don't mean to be an alarmist - but I am sure you will get to the bottom of it - 250s are nice and bright
