fwiw... the new Aqueon 90 gallon (single overflow) is pre-drilled for two 1" bulkheads. The old ones had one 1" and one 3/4". The new ones are better for implementing the herbie method since you now have a 1" for your siphon AND a 1" for your e-drain.
Mine had the same issue and i am running a Durso style plumbing. I added a valve on the vinyle tubing/return line and was able to fine tune it. No more noisey overflow/drain. It's trying to push to much and the overflow drain cannot handle the volume and is getting lots of air i think in the flex hose. I am also using flex hose on mine, that is what i think is the issue. I did not want to use a herbie on this system as i don't want anything showing for the returns.
