Need help with SPS

I have an acropora that seems to have a large white area at the base. Not sure if it is starting to die. What can I do? Should I frag it before everything dies off?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

was the white area in a shaded area? Was it recently mounted? Is it growing larger quickly? Do you have any pics?

I had the piece in the middle section of the tank. It is sort of shaded the way the coral is growing. I bought this piece from Live aquaria about 2 months ago. It does not seem to be growing much. Very slow. All other sps doing great water paramaters are perfect.

Just noticed it last night. Area is about the size of a dime. Not sure how fast it is spreading Keeping an eye on it today.

I would say if you notice it spreading quickly then you should probably try to save what you can. If it has multiple branches you may want to clip one now and mount it just to be safe.

If you post a pic others may be able to tell you what they feel is causing it.

Thanks Kevin. I will keep an eye on it today and see if it spreads. It might have always been there and never noticed it because i did move this coral.

Well it looks like the white area is spreading but very slowly. Still keeping an eye on it. It is at the bottom and under shade. I had another piece that died but it was pure white within 1 day.

I would take a frag of the coral that is slowly turning white asap. I had this happen to me last year. The two frags I took of the colony are doing great now.
The rest of the colony died within two days. SPS are tricky. All can be doing fine, then one just dies.

yeah. I had this happen to me too. Just came down one morning, and the tank was straight white and all my SPS was ticked off....oh, what's that? SPS doesn't like water with a pH of 10.5...sooo picky.

+1 to the frag though. If it's super slow...like virtually non-existent, then it's just receding from the shaded region. If it's been in the same spot/flow for years and it's receding, frag it quick.
