need more flow..... please help

okay all... I am a newbi with a 55 gal and trying to create a reef. I have one maxi jet 900 running in my tank and I need more... much more. Does anyone have any suggestions or anything used to sell me? you know the newbi budget.

I have 4 MaxiJet 1200's (2 or 3 (?) with magfloats attached) and a Chauvet DJ lightswitch/wavemaker that you can have for 70.00 plus shipping (or pick it up if you ever make it to St. Louis).

To be honest I really dont know what kind of corals I plan on keeping. Right know all i have in my tank is about 25 lbs of LR, one yellow tang (named it Poon), wife hates the name but I get a kick out of it...
I also have two damsels (not named, because they probably wont stay).
I plan on adding more LR and other creatures as I go.
But I first need to up my flow and knock out my red algae.

Thank you for the offer on the Maxi Jets, but I was hoping to use one or two power heads on my tank becuase my temp is already at 84-86 with no heaters, thats the lighting only causing it.

I also want to thank everyone else for replying and welcoming me into the SEALS and this forum. this hobby would be much more difficult without the tips, tricks, and help from everyone.

I would suggest to aim for at least 30x volume flow. On your size tank, this comes out to at least 1650gph. Then figure out what pumps you might want to use to accomplish that flow. One example that would fit the bill would be a pair of Seio 820's. Do you have a sump at all on this tank? I would say that until you get a handle on your temp swings, you probably won't have a real happy reef.

Do you have the top of the tank covered? Glass tops? You need to cool it off. That is too hot IMHO, for constant operation.

Take off the glass tops if you have them.

I dont have any glass tops on, and yes I do have an inclosed hood. I do have two fans to put into my hood that I havent done yet. I am thinking those should help alot.

For my flow I think I may try going with an mj1200 and continue with my 900 as well.
Do you think my heat is causing my red algea bloom as well?

And that MJ is not going to give you anywhere near the flow you need. That's not even 10x flow with both of them going. Flow will also help with the cyanobacteria.

A Seio 820 isn't nearly enough flow for that tank. You'll need like 3 or 4 of them and it's not worth the $150 total. It was barely enough flow for my 30 gallon and it also contained a seio 620.

Get the maxijet mod. If you're doing softies/lps, get the medium flow. if you're doing sps get the high flow. it's the only pump you'll need.

Of course, this is not the only possible way to go as there are maxijet mods, tunzes, etc etc etc yadda yadda yadda. Myself, I would rather have flow on opposite sides of the tank as opposed to having one MJ mod blasting from one end. And no, you would not need 3 or 4 of them. 30x flow on a 55 is 1650gph, two 820's would give you 1640 gph. You could go higher, but I don't think at this point the guy is looking to create a hurricane in there right now.

In my experience though, the smaller seio's flow output declines drastically without monthly cleaning.

With the 2 820's in there, it's going to be difficult to get flow along the bottom of the tank. With a flow as dispersed as theirs, the head(i guess that's what it would still be called) can't be more than 5 feet. So by the time the water gets to the other end of the tank it won't be able to hit the wall and circle to the bottom of the tank.

Does that make sense?

I could sell him my two 1500's that I think I'm going to replace with Tunzes anyway. That should move some water in there.
