i have a 30 gallon tank, with lps corals, 2 perculas, 1 six line wrasse. I'm looking for one more fish to add to my tank but i'm not sure what. I really like anthias but it seems like they all need a large size tanks. what fish would be a good addition to my tank? my six line wrasse is very friendly. I've had him with a firefish before and they got a long really well

I would stay with something small like an orchid dottyback or strawberry dottyback... either one should hold their own with the clowns and wrasse.

I'd go orchid. I think that's a fine idea. But I've never had a sixline so grains of salt all around. Good luck.

I would be very careful adding any sort of dottyback to your tank. These little guys (in general) tend to be very aggressive and once they make a tank home they defend it fiercely.

As for anthias, there are many species that are very easy to keep provided you are willing to provide the proper environment and feeding schedule. Unfortunately there are not many that will do well long term in a 30 gallon tank. That said, Serranocirrhitus latus (Fat Head Sunburst Anthias) will do fine in your size tank. These little guys behave more like a hawkfish than athias and tend to hug the rockwork rather than swimming mid column.

I am also a HUGE fan of any of the Liopropoma reef basslets. These guys stay small, tend to get along with any other fish and very hardy.

You will need something tough enough to hold its own against the pair of damsels and a sixline wrasse... a dottyback is perfect. The orchid is one of the calmer dottybacks and should keep to itself.

I disagree, while I do admit that sixline wrasses can be aggressive, the vast majority of psuedochromis and dottybacks are just plain mean. The orchid is one of the few that I can think of that tend to be on the more docile side.

Maybe try a royal gramma, can't beat their price and color. Maybe take out the sixline and put in bucket for an hour or so while the gramma or whichever you choose gets settled.

Just eliminates aggression if there will be any, as you say he/she seems docile.

You are disagreeing and then saying the same thing I said "sixline wrasses are aggressive". A pair of clowns can be very aggressive in a small tank too. You dont need to disagree just to disagree.

I guess I should have been more clear. I was disagreeing that a dottyback "IS" perfect.

I am not disagreeing just to do so. I am simply stating my opinion/experience with these fish...

I agree with megatrev on the Royal Gramma. This is one of my favorite reef fish of all time, and when kept in harems the interaction is amazing to watch. Plus these guys tend to be very docile, but can hold their own if need be.

Me too. I have kept both for many yrs and havent had aggression issues with either one. Now if you want to talk about an aggressive dottyback... the neon dottyback can be a real terror. Royal grammas are also a favorite of mine...I have three right now in my 600g tank.
