1. I am going to pick up a 55 gallon tank to use as my sump. I will need to drill it on the side, does it matter if i get glass or acrylic? is one better to drill or less likely to break during the drilling?

2. I cant find the black acrylic shields with the teeth at the top that cover overflows. Im not entirely sure what they are called. can anyone point me in the right direction?

FWIW
Acrylic easier to drill and glue also.

Gl*******s.com for the overflow parts

I just bent some acrylic and used a rotozip to make the teeth on my overflow.

Checkout lots of build threads and ask lots of questions as you go. One mistake I made I put 1" PVC supply in the bottom of the tank, I should have siliconed it to the bottom. It has worked up the sand now its on top and I can't bury it again.

I cant find the acrylic shields anywhere on the internets, I cant believe there isnt a market for those things. Is it easy enought to bend the stuff? I need to man up and buy some more tools but they really cut into the hobby budget...

I also pefer acrylic because it is easier to work with.
And less likely to crack if you are moving equipment/rock in your sump

I have an acrylic sump that might work well for you.
Approx 35" x 13" x 15" with bubble traps. Asking $60.
I can take pics if you are interested.

I appreciate the offer but I want to go with a 55 for the extra length, I want the sump to have a good size fuge in it. I have a 29 for my current set up and I have been looking forward to some extra space to work in.

A $30 black and decker rotary cut tool and a propane torch. a couple of C clamps and two pieces of angle iron or square steel tube to bend between. An old bed frame most of the stuff you can find scrap laying around the house or in the alley...:eek1:

thanks guys I appreciate the assistance. I found out that I cant drill the bottom on my tank and the back window is where the holes are gonna be.

I am going to do a coast to coast Beananimal failsafe/silent overflow system. I just have to figure out the gph flow rate pump size ect. Probably going to do like a mag 18 or mag 24.

Thinking about a closed loop too. I probably wouldnt use it at first but just drill it and have it ready incase I decide to implement it later.

Will - sounds like a plan and good choice on the beananimal overflow !!!

The bean animal is the bomb....Thats what I have and it is dead silent. If you build your stand right you can hide most all of it and have some room for storage electronics ect..
you can check out mine here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BSy-yu54PvU&list=UUT-I3DDbJpv36NEgi4Qfwbw&index=5&feature=plcp I did 1" and I have it valved and reduced way back. I would be a bit concerned about startup with a larger pump. I run a mag 9.5. Only in a power outage. Maybe a UPS is the way to go there??

be careful using a mag 18 or mag 24 internally, they put off quite a bit of heat. If you have any trouble at all keeping your temps down now, I would suggest looking for an external pump. Also if you want to be able to add a closed loop system.

Thanks for the responses guys.

Whatever pump I use will be external, I treasure my sump space and am even thinking of keeping my skimmer out of it this time around.

I use a mag 9.5 externally on my 90 and have no heat issues to speak of I was thinking mag 18 because higher volume of water in the 150 needs more turnover. I have been looking at the little giants and darts also but the only kind I really know are the mags.

Newsalth, Im not sure what you mean by ups

I was at home depot getting some stuff for the stand tonight and I was checking out the drillbits. For all the hours I have spent on the beananimal thread/ homepage I am still confused / conflicted. I dont know how big of holes I should put in the tank for the overflow. Brett how big are yours?

I went to sea today to pick up some stuff and was very bummed that all of my hobby money is going into equipment right now because they had a lot of cool rics and I really wanted a harem of anthias

Dangerwill, yes if the mag pumps are used externally, the heat exchange wouldn't be bad. But I do believe you would be happier with a little giant or dart pump.

An uninterruptable power supply kinda like you have on your computer. I'm just not sure abut the lagtime from getting the air out of the siphon if it would overflow the tank. Watch the beananimal on my youtube page and see if that helps.
