need skimmer advice

planning 240 (it will be pretty heavily stocked) with 150 gallon stock tank sump probably a 40 or 50 gallon frag tank and 20 gallon refuge would a rps 3000 rated at 400 gallon be good enough or would i be better off to go with a rps 5000 rated at 800 gallons . they are rebranded octopus the rps 3000 is suppose to be the same as the octopus dnw 200 and the rps 5000 is similar to the dnw 300

I would use the largest skimmer you can afford Especially since you are telling us it is going to be heavily stocked. Skimming is the lifeline of your tank, IMO.

Well i want to plan for worst case with the stocking levels ... thats why i was looking at the one rated at 800 gallons... but i have read that you can over skim a tank. I dont plan to over stock but some of the fish im planning are not the cleanest fish ... ie stink ray, cross hatch....

thats funny it shows the rps 5000 and 8000 rated at 800 gallons and the rps 6000 rated at 600

I would go with a Reeflo 250 Pro kit or the Reeflo 200 Pro depending on how many fish you are planning on keeping. I had a DNW200 and it barely was able to handle my old 120. I use a Reeflo 200 on my 210 and have been very impressed with it's performance. The owner of reefspecialty.com is very knowledgable about Reeflo skimmers if you need more info. His RC name is acropora nut if you would like to PM him about info.

I don't think you can overskim. Especially with a big old nasty fish tank If I know you being a Planet Reef FISHHEAD, you are going to have plenty of big, filthy piggy fish that eat and poop all the live long day. Better go bigger than anything you think is practical. Take the skimmer that Spongebobby is recommending and double it and you might be close to what you need Don't be a commoner with the skimmer, go crazy dude

I am limited to certain brands as where im getting it from .... octopus mrc and asm are whats available right now... if i was willing to wait others are available but i have the ability to get a really good deal on any of these

I would get the biggest and best skimmer out there. I think a skimmer is one of the most looked over or least thought out piece of equipment we put on our tanks.

I would get a H/S or a reeflo skimmer.

The reason I always pimp H/S is they have a 2 year warrenty you cant get better as far as I know.

I have a DNW-200 and would advise against it. You have to mod it to get it to pull decent skimmate and then it becomes a maintenance issue of changing to mesh frequently (draining/ refilling). tuning it is also a pain as it comes with a ball valve. The plumbing is all metric so its not easily replaceable. just my $.02 do with it what you like.
