Need some advice on a closed loop pump

Hi everyone.

I'm setting up a new tank. 26x15x14. The volume is only 22g and I'm setting up my first CL system but I need some advice on the pump.

The water will go through the overflow, into the pump, into a SCWD, and finally get split into 4 returns before heading back into the tank.

I've used an Ehiem1262 before and I love it because it's so quiet and doesn't get hot, but i think a 900gph pump might not be enough flow especially if it's going through a SCWD.

For all you Mag users out there:

1. How loud does a Mag12 get?
2. If run externally, does it add a lot of heat to your tank? (My Mag5 when running in the sump of my 35g tank bumped up the temp by 10 degrees!)

I was also thinking about a Quiet One 5000 but people are telling me that it's quite loud if running externally.

Can someone please point me out in the right direction? I'd like a pump that can push about 1200gph because I'll be doing mixed corals and need the push for SPS.

If all fails, then I may just go with the Ehiem and not install a SCWD.

Thanks everyone!

I just ordered an ocean runner pump for my 110g set up. Super Quite and really low wattage. Both inline or submersible.

I think a Mag12 in a 22gal tank is overkill. Besides the flow being 50+times the water volume, that pump gets hot. It is not very noisey as long as you cushion it properlybut it does get loud when you restrict it.

my mag 12 doesn't seem to be loud. i happen to like it. i have a dart 3600 on my closed loop, its not running yet so i wont be able to let you know till i finish on friday.

talk to Siapin about the closed loop. he did a few of them and i think he just put a dart 2400 (i think) on his 30 gallon.

The mag 12 does get hot though huh? I know it's overkill but I figured since it's going to go through a SCWD and then get split again in 2, the 1200gph would be good. No?

I can turn my pump off and touch it, it's warm. I dont know how hot exactly but 5 minutes later, it's still warm to the touch. I'm sure it has to do with it not being electically efficient. Many posts on this site about how it consumes more power than what it's rated at. I got it because it was cheap. I dont think there is another pump out there as reliable and powerful that is as cheap. It really gets my water moving in my 60. I cant imagine it in a 22gal, but depending on head pressure, plumbing and nozzles, I supose you can have a lot of pump loss. Still, the ehat issue alone might be cause not to get it. I would plumb efficiently and get a cooler pump. I cant say with experience about the iwaki, but I know the Ehiem 1260 or 1262 should do you well.
