Need some advice..........

I'm currently downgrading from my 180 mixed reef to a 100 tank. I want to now stock more SPS corals. My question is if I'm keeping the rock and some of the coral, how much of the water in the 180 should I transfer over and how much new water should I mix in with it? 50/50?? 25 old/75 new? I've decided to put in new sand and seed it with some sand from the 180. Should I let the new tank run for awhile (a couple of days?) before I put the stuff in? Or can I immediately start moving stuff over? Thanks for the suggestions!

eek. I have always been told and i have no idea if this is true or not. but been told there is no added value in just the water. its mainly the sand. that being said i would personally transfer 75% and add 25% new.

This is only my opinion of what i would do and plan to do when my new tank gets here!

By the way I did stay at a Holiday Inn last night:)

You can always switch over immediately, but if you can set it up with some water from the 180, like from a water change, seed the sand bed, and give it some time, that would be ideal to me.
When switching things over, mainly if you switch immediately, use mostly old water. Think of it like a water change and use 90g old water and 10g new. You have then kept things as stable as possible and done a 10% water change to boot.

Davey, there is definitely value to the old water in a couple of ways.
First, your corals and fish are used to that water, whether good or bad.
Second, there is a load of bacteria in the water that does process waste. There is definitely more in the rocks and sand, especially bacteria that process nitrate, but there is plenty in the water as well.

I don't have experience to back up any suggestions I might make, but unless your water quality is bad, why not use the old. The rock (and anything growing on it) and any corals you keep are used to it.

i agree with jtarmitage i moved my tank before and used all the same water rock and sand and everything was fine
