Need Some Help Here **PICS**

I was at a new LFS and bought quite a bit of stuff for my tank. The owner being nice told me she would like to give me a free piece of SPS out of this HUGE tank packed full of frags. Just a few weeks ago I put three new pieces of SPS in my tank that someone gave me free to rescue out of his tank and they are doing great and showing growth so I figured I would be ok.

I put this piece in about a week ago and it is not looking good. I dose two part Ca/Alk and MG. I feed DT's live phyto and flake/greens to the tank and once a week two silversides to each anemone.

Params are:

Salinity 1.026
Ca- 460
ammonia-0
nitirites-0
nitrates-0
ph- 8.2 or so I think(using junky test kit, pinpoint should be here this weekend)
MG- 1300 and dosing heavy to target 1400+, has been at 1200 up till today
temp- 78-79 never colder or hotter than that

Tank has been set up about 5 months. Refugium, cheato, great growth on softies. Any ideas?

Here is some birds nest that went in at the same time and it seems to be doing good (except it broke into 3 pieces, long story)

what's your lighting like, and how's your flow?

Speaking of flow, I love your avatar.

Lighting is two Geismann 54w T5's on individual ice cap SLR reflectors and two super actinic URI 110w VHO's. Sig info below is all accurate.

I have it sitting on a shelf that is being directly blasted by a maxi 1200 from across the tank. You can see the other SPS stuff in the back ground of the pictures above and they seem very happy.

Not sure everyone gets the avatar, but sometimes Im glad they dont. I meet with alot of local reefers.:D

what is your alk?

Oops, missed that one, 3.0 to 3.5 meq/l

Thats a really old pic, here is a newer one. Would dosing 200 ml's of MG per day for the last three days cause too big a change?

Just thought of something else. I only have 5 chromis and one tang. Not very much fish poo in the tank right now.

Shouldn't as long as you don't go over 100 ppm of magnesium a day. That is roughly the high end to try not to exceed.

U dont want 1400 MG...target 1300-1350..dont let it get under 1300 or over 1350 and you will be golden.

Nice pink taco!!!!

Sand bed looks really clean?????I had to yank mine!!!!but i guess it is a 110 so double the 55 i have.....you need alot more flow IMO.....can I interest you in about 50-100X turnover?????

Yeah, I was thinking on adding another 1200. I have a powerhead 802 right behind that shelf piece that you cant see. Its down low in the tank pointing towards the maxi 1200. And with the mag 9 return blowing really hard I have ok flow now, but I do think I can use more. For now I leave the SPS pieces on that shelf where they are directly under a T5 bulb and getting direct flow from the 1200.

seios are better than MJ's for flow.. tiny directed streams are not as good as large volume pumps. But your light may not be enough... I have 6 t5's over my frag tank, and 4 mh 250 over my main display.

Not entirely true. Randy Holmes-Farley cites natural seawater conentrations of Mg2+ at around 1285ppm Source and even says that it is fine to have a concentration between the range of 1200-1400ppm.

I tend to try and target a weight ratio of 3:1 that of my calcium (420ppm) so a value of ~1260ppm. As a per ion comparison, there are 5x more Magnesium ions, however going by molecular weight, there is a 3:1 difference. I don't believe there is any published elements that the calcification of corals increases with a calcium level above 400ppm, so there is probably little reason to maintain a value above

This is a neat article that is somwhat unrelated, but there is a graph on how much our food affects the magnesium concentration: http://www.advancedaquarist.com/issues/oct2003/chem.htm

As for flow, it might not hurt to add some more, something along the lines of a SEIO or if you are technically inclined, you could modifiy your maxijets.

You dont list a phosphate test and I see that you are adding flake food, which many brands are high in phosphate. Get a PO4 test and see if you have some. It is worse that Nitrate for SPS in my opinion.
