im getting ready to get certified and i need some gear. I really need to keep the cost down as low as possible.

I need:
mask
snorkel
fins
wetsuit
boots

and again i just need the most basic of gear... nothing fancy

With a mask, just get what fits your face and is comfortable. Don't cheap out here.

Snorkel, you can go cheap with just a regular J-tube, but if I were you I would at least buy one with a flexible hose at the bottom so it will drop away from your face when you have the regulator in.

Fins-You can just get a basic paddle fin, but you got to think about what kind of diving you will be doing most. A lot of people say you can conserve air/energy going with a split fin...which is always nice, but others say if you do a lot of beach diving, that you can't always get the thrust you need with a split and go with a paddle fin.

Wetsuit...where are you going to be doing most of your diving? I ended up getting a great deal at unrealfinds.com

Boots...just get something basic. IST has them for $20 or so.

You will probably want to make sure you have a dive knife too. If you are diving in colder water you might want to thing about a hood and gloves also.

well all of my training will be cold water and what are some other good sites

and what is a good basic setup price range, so i know if im getting a good deal or not

Hey Bhass,

There are a couple stores in St. Louis up north here that will include most of what you are looking for in the price of the certification class.

I have a 7/6mm wetsuit for diving in California waters. I got both mine and my wifes for less than $600. The last time I went out, the water was in the high 50's. If it is going to be colder than that where you are diving you may want to look into a dry suit.

If not, get a hooded vest, they come as thick as 3mm. I got my wifes for $70. You can get a basic hood for ~$30, sometimes less...get one with a bib though so the water doesn't leak in your suit.

Another thing to look into is a dive skin. It helps putting on and taking off your wetsuit. I got mine for $90.

As for your mask, you are looking at $60-$90. Like I said before, don't skimp here. If it rubs against the bridge of your nose, you are going to be uncomfortable. If you get one that doesn't fit correctly, you might as well just not get one because you will have constant leaks.

Fins, for a basic paddle fin, you are looking at ~$50. The more bells and whistles you get the more expensive they get.

Gloves, $20.

You can shop around online to get the best deals. But there isn't much money in SCUBA diving, so be sure to support your shop where you are getting certified. Since you are getting your cert there, they will generally give you a discount. Not only that, if something goes wrong with your equipment, it will be easier to get it serviced.
