I'd tell him to scrap to undergravel all together and use a gravel washer siphon. IMO, undergravel filters are a pain and create problems down the road with Nitrates. Just my Opinion though.

I would be interested in any other thoughts about this. I threw out all my undergravels about 20 years ago.

This is for a freshwater setup.....i would never tell anyone to use a UGF in a saltwater setup. In freshwater, they are IMO, the best form of biological filtration there is, next to a wet dry. Theres a TON of surface area on that gravel bed. I see no reason not to utilize the gravel and turn it into a filter rather than just a crap trap. I realize there is still a need for gravel washing but it doesn't have to be on such a frequent basis.

BTW:what freshwater stuff do you keep?

I was thinking freshwater, but the crap never leaves the tank under those plates to produce nitrates. That is why I don't use them and wash gravel about once a month with a Magnum. But then again I always tend to have nitrates a bit high because my fish are old and big.

I have had freshwater most of my life. I currently have three 55 fW tanks. One with 3 Royal Blue Discus, Royal Pleco, Synadontis Angelicus, Gold Nugget Pleco and a Rhino Pleco. All about 8 years old. Obviously my pride and joy! Then I have a 55 for my wife with angels. I have another 55 setup that had two nice Oscars and a large Synadontis Nigreventris(SP?), then the 14 year old got Ferrets. I never gave it a thought. Dang that was a well fed ferret.

Yeah i guess that is one downfall of the UGF but i think that if your do "regular" gravel washings, the amount of biological filtration it has, makes it a lot more beginner friendly. If you have huge fish, feed a lot and are having problems with crap collecting under the plates maybe try feeding less or uping the mechanical filtration.

Are you doing discus in hard water? I guess i've never really heard of people doing synodontis with discus. Being synodontis are from lake Tanganyika and discus are from the Amazon.

I just set up a 55. I think I'm going to put some Maliwi Peacocks in it. I'm thinking German Reds they are pretty sweet.

The one in the garage is for a 90 or a 75 and the one in the driveway if for a 40 breeder.....

Well actually, the ferret just pulled the Oscars and Synadontis out of the tanks and they fell behind. He didn't actually eat them. It was just more colorful that way. ;0)

Waverz, I know but Synadontis are much more forgiving and will still do well in soft water (RO/DI). These have always been my favorites and I decided about 8 years to attempt to keep them together. I used to have 2 Syn Euc's in there as well. And I forgot, the Synadontis in with the Oscars wasn't a Nig... it was was a Eucalyptus (sp? again)
