I did a 15% water change on my 75 yesterday. Today I tested my mag which was 750, my cal was 380 and nitrates were a ridiculous 40. I have been suppl with mag and cal everyday. Why is'nt it going up and why would my nitrates be so high even after my water change yesterday?

tami1024, I will get this started, because I know someone else is gonna want to know more about your set up, so as to get you the help you need.
What mag cal supplement are you using? How long has it been since last water change?
Other params?

Filtration? Refugium?
What salt?
Please help us out and lend some more info so we can give some good advice.

Thanks

I am using Seachems Advantage Calcium and Seachems Advantage Magnesium. My water change was 15% yesterday. mag 750 cal 380 ph 7.8 alk 12.0 sal 1.024 no ammonia nits are 40. I have no test kit for PH. The strips that I use show PH within range. But I am told those are crap. My tank consists of 2 flowerpot corals,1 brittle star, 1 coral banded shrimp, 2 rock nems 2 crocea clams, few plants, 2 damsels,1 tomato clown, some zoas. Filteration is a wet/dry with bio balls, no refugium. And I use IO salt.

OK thanks for the info. How often do you do WC's? I have no experience with the Seachem products you are using, so hopefully someone else can chime in on theose.
I would start by suggesting you start doing some resaerch on refugiums. You will be happy. Start taking out the bioballs slowly, like a cup a week. Those are nitrate "factories". Is there a way for you to put some chaetomorphia, and a light in your sump?
When I swithed to a refubium on my system, I saw amazing results.
I would think about maybe checking into some other calcium and magnesium supplements, unless someone else has some better advice about what you are using.
How much LR do you have in the tank? I like using Heat drivewaysalt(turbo Calcium) to bolster my calcium, and then I drip kalk in my top off water. Epsom salt is a good magnesium supplement also.

I was dong a WC about every 2 weeks, now I am doing a 15% once a week. Can I just replace the bios with chaetomorphia and put a light on it?

Do you have any pictures of the sump? I would pull out the bioballs slowly, as to not shock the system. You will get great results with the chaeto in the sump.

I do use the kent Turbo cal on occassion. Can I suppl with this all the time and also how often do u use Epsom and how do you add to your tank? I have approx 100 lbs of LR but that is just a wild guess.

My sump is an older version of the Deluxe Pro Series (Eshopps) 100-125 gal. I pic of it on Aquarium Guys. Also do I need to make sure all of the bios are out before adding chaeto or can I add as I am removing the bios?

Tami, a couple of thoughts:

Agreed with spleify, the bio-balls are a bad idea. Since you have a decent amount of LR in the tank, they are unneeded, and probably a source of your high nitrates. And I would second his recommendation that you remove them gradually....remember, nothing good happens fast in reef tanks :)

Second, I suspect that your Mg test might be off. 750 seems way too low.

I'm not familiar with Seachem's Advantage Calcium, but if it just adds Calcium and not alkalinity, it will get your tank params way out of whack. You might want to take a look at the Ca and Alk articles linked here by Randy Holmes-Farley, the god of all things reef-chemistry related :)

One final suggestion...assuming your stocklist is up to date, you should have a very low need for Ca/Alk in your tank. You might want to stop using any additives, and just do regular water changes. That would give you a good baseline for figuring out which additives are useful.
